I worked at South Seattle Community College part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Some people very friendly, understanding and able to help you with your job if you do not understand

    Cons

Supervisor and some Deans are very racially motivate to try and get rid of you by picking on certain race groups

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to go to diversity training especially the HR and people of power.

I have been working at South Seattle Community College part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Some co-workers and dean's was really high on letting the employees think about new ways to do things and never held you back or micro manage you

    Cons

The department that I was in did not treat people with respect, courtesy, would sometime use racial comments and nothing would be done about it. Would pick on the person of color just to see how far they could push her to make her quit. They talk about diversity but never practice the definition of what it means.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get training for diversity for supervisors, dean's and presidents of the college. Also, get a HR person who is not there to protect the college. List to what the employees are telling you about the problems that they are having and the departments and not just believe management

I have been working at South Seattle Community College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The community on the campus is fantastic and the people are great to work with. Instructors have course development power and opportunities to create new courses as well.

    Cons

Like other colleges around the US, budget cuts has hit this campus hard and they are now replacing full time work with part time workers, faculty to staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer the slightest bit of job security to keep employees interested.

I have been working at South Seattle Community College

    Pros

If you care about the mission of community colleges, want a laid-back, casual work atmosphere with other mission-driven instructors, and like a college campus environment, this campus has less tension between admin/faculty/staff than a lot of other places do (from what i understand)
Great place to experience true diversity (age/ethnic/programs/gender/background/etc) Where else can you get an airplane hangar, an auto mechanics program, a campus bakery and a wine and welding building in one place?

    Cons

Change happens VERY slowly here. If you are fast-paced and like getting things done, you will have to learn patience. If you're looking to be $$$ recognized for your work with promotions or raises, look elsewhere. This is a good place to shine in your own position, but often a difficult place to get system-wide change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The college website is a dis-service to our students and to all users. It also reflects the lack of organization that the campus sometimes suffers from.
