I worked at Southeastern Freight Lines full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great folks who actually "work" there. Respectable company in the industry with proven records of satisfaction and success.

    Cons

Too much old school thinking, i.e. "we've always done it this way"; lots of do as I say, not as I do from Management staff; Upper management doesn't do enough due diligence to really see and understand what's truly going on at each terminal. Core employees are fearful to be honest about most work day situations due to reprecussions after the fact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take your blinders off, invest in your people, invest in your account management. Really find out for yourselves what's going on. Ask yourself why you ask/demand so much from your account manager/sales team, but not much on the reward side? Terminal managers go on a week long trip annually with meetings, outings, fun time, but when do you provide the same to your sales team?

    Pros

Strong finically .money to buy new equipment

    Cons

Company started going in a different direction after new management took over a few years ago. Once top of industry for as pay and benefits it has gone from a great place to work to just another trucking co. Getting bottom feeder people and pay.

  5. Appears on the outside as your final destination on the career path but quickly turns into a daily "Nightmare"

    Pros

If you like high pay but a schedule of uncertainty this may be your "dream job"! As a whole the company has a goal to make this your "last stop" for career path. When you quit someone else always folkows your lead. Almost two years and six driver quit and all of quit in pairs. Don't worry if you make the mistake of hiring in, when you wake up from your nightmare someone will be quoting with you. "FOR YOU ARE NOT ALONE"!.

    Cons

Management is young. In the Mobile Service Center the manager started out at 18 with SEFL now 28 and is still really immature when it comes to managing men that in some instances are twice his age. He is very easily intimidated by guys that have been there for years. The "buddy system" is alive and growing in this service center. As a new guy more times than not you will be asked to do the stops or pickups that in some if not all instances the veteran guys refuse to or make excuses not to do. The outbound supervisor is a great guy but is one card short of a full deck. He has made bone headed decisions and loves the "buddy system" I spoke of earlier. You call in at 6 in morning to be told to be there in 30 mins, 45 mins, up to but not limited to a couple hours later. In the slow time of the year you are rotated off days only to see the good ole boys be rotated from the truck but allowed to work the dock for 5-7 hours to make their time.while you the "not good ole buddy" sits at home either without pay or use one of the three personal days or vacation time you have so you don't starve. Oh and all the while still hiring new drivers during this rotation time. No growth oppurtunities due to you have to be in the "kiss behind" click. Pay per hour is fantastic but low for the amount of work you do and they don't pay overtime. They really starting trimming back the hours you put in. They started to cut you down to an averse of 45 or less a week. Plain out a bad mistake and nightmare that you will wish you had woke up before you agreed to go aboard. SEFL Mobile service center is "The Titanic" you don't want to be in!!! Got out as quickly as I could but still gave that place to much of my time and life!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Kill the buddy system! Be willing to step up and discipline the one who give you problems! Hire veteran service center managers not kids that will jump at your every whim. Get some one who will be a team player and treat the whole te fairly not just the guys in "your buddy system'!

I have been working at Southeastern Freight Lines full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The transportation industry is probably not the first thing you think of when you think about technology, but Southeastern is on the leading edge of technology in our industry. The trajectory of the use of technology is decidedly upward, and in my opinion, Southeastern is one of the better Java shops in Columbia.

As a mid-sized, privately owned company, you will get a fairly wide range of experience.
Solid company culture of doing quality work and valuing people, which the company stands by.

Better benefits package than most IT shops in town.

    Fair salary structure.

Family feel to the work environment.

    Cons

Every job is what you make of it. If you work here and don't really have a desire to grow professionally, you can do that. If you have a desire to learn and improve yourself and the company, you can do that too.

The company is over 50 years old, so it still makes use of a lot of older technology. There is a fair amount of COBOL development, so if that's your thing, then go for it; but if you want to do java / web development, make sure you know what the job description is before accepting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work of continually improving and giving your employees the resources, training, and motivation to excel at their jobs.

    Pros

Awesome people and outstanding and friendly management. Good Christian company

    Cons

some of the other employees are lazy and complacent, dont act like they want to work so it can be frustrating, this causes the management to at times place extra work on other employees that actually do work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little nicer to the guys who come in to pick up other employees slack and show your appreciation for them.

    Pros

Great company culture with good management and clear direction is given to employees. The leadership is great and it trickles down to the employees

    Cons

There aren't a ton of cons that I can think of. It may tend to get a little hot on the dock during the summer, but that is what is signed up for when you take the job.
