Pros
Great company and people
Lots of opportunity
Great pay
Greaat benefits and retirement package
Paid vacation and sick time
Plenty of growth
Cons
Some positions require qualitites that are impossible to have to apply
Too political
inconsistantcies with positions and the employees who fill those positions
Advice to Senior Management
I would recommend being consistent having the same union and not two different unions such as as IBEW and UWUA (SONGS). Difficult to apply for IBEW positions when working for UWUA
Pros
Very stable, the company is huge and there are many business units you can move to once you are in.
Cons
The culture can be very old fashioned and slow to move, very traditional in certain aspects. Hard to be seen depending on group
Advice to Senior Management
Listen more to your employees and do not be afraid to make changes. Although things may have been done the same way for the past fifty years, be willing to adapt.
Pros
family oriented. Allow you to maintain a good balance of work and life.
Cons
incompetent management hire and promote incompetent people. Too much reliance on contractors. The contractors are taking over slowly and gradually. After contractors has been around more than 3 years, the productivity of the contractor also goes down the hill.
Advice to Senior Management
hire the new management or replace some of existing ones.
Pros
Great benefits package.
Nice employees and management.
Cons
Less than challenging work assignments. Everyone is too relaxed at times.
Advice to Senior Management
Challenge your employees
Pros
work/life balance, easy to move into new groups
Cons
bureaucratic, it can be difficult to implement change
Advice to Senior Management
Less top down decision making
Pros
The company culture is pretty friendly, and job security is pretty much assured. It is a utility, so revenues are pretty much guaranteed. There is very little job pressure. I saw people taking naps in the afternoon at the desks. The benefits are good.
Cons
There is a very conservative culture. Any efforts to change how business is done is met with suspicion and resistance. Don't expect to join the company and make big waves. This is a place for low stress work, and no consequences for lack of effort.
Advice to Senior Management
The HR department is rather useless. Everything takes forever.
Pros
Great benefits, still includes the ever-more-rare these days pension, flexible work schedule, comp time, great PTO, very relaxed corporate culture.
Cons
There is a strong sense of office politics. Bureaucratics play a big part of day to day business working here.
Advice to Senior Management
There should be more opportunities for movement within the company. There are a lot now, but lateral movement is not as easy as previously made out to be. It would be beneficial to have management evolve from within with experience in different departments.
Pros
nice people. slow pace environment. good pay :)
Cons
slow environment. not a perfect place for young people to seek a lot of knowledge
Pros
-competitive pay
-great people
-challenging projects
-dedicated workers
Cons
-repetitive project types
-tendency for workers to become complacent
Advice to Senior Management
I'm not exactly sure how management should be done, but clearer methods of the hiring process and promotion with groups would be appreciated.
Pros
Good benefits e.g. medical, dental, vision, vacation and 401k. Pay is pretty good in the beginning.A lot of different jobs available.
Cons
Bad management, over paid management, this creates an elitist attitude towards rank and file employees. Managers cover a lot of mistakes up. Managers rarely possess the education or skills necessary to preform job effectively. Many people are promoted to mangers who have been total screw ups in previous job, but are promoted by inside connections or brownnosing. A supervisor who lied to the NRC was then promoted to a manager position. This was done even after the NRC recommended they terminate his employment. They promoted him in order to make it look like he was not part of the problem any longer.
Advice to Senior Management
Look at the core competencies (education, experience ect, ect) of many manger positions and compare them with the many of the current managers and you will find a lot of managers should not be in their positions. That’s why SONGS is at INPO 4.SONGS is a chilled work environment.
