Engineering Co-Op (Current Employee)
Pensacola, FL

I have been working at Southern Company

ProsIt is a great place to begin a career. Management is great, the opportunities to learn are great, opportunity to explore new areas is open,

ConsIt is a very large company, they are currently not trying to expand, health benefits seem high, pay could be more.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue hiring co-ops that have performed well. Overall, the company is performing well and the management is doing a great job to keep employees happy.

It's about doing the right thing: A Strong Committment to Customers and Employees

Compliance Project Manager (Current Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Southern Company

ProsVery friendly, trustworthy atmosphere. People really seem to care and so does the Company as a whole. Southern maintains a very friendly work environment and places an emphasis on work/life balance - it's not uncommon to hear from Management that, "Your family comes first." The training and opportunities for advancement are comparable to most any other large corporation, as are the employee benefits.

ConsIt's a large corporation and therefore suffers from all politics and beauracracies one would expect.

Advice to Senior ManagementSouthern Company has a positive corporate culture overall - please continue to foster this. Employees really appreciate working for the company and the associated feeling of being part of a larger "Family." Let's continue to succeed and continue to demonstrate ourcommittment to the success of our employees.

Southern Company is a great company to work for!!!!!!

Govt Account Manager (Current Employee)
Tifton, GA

I have been working at Southern Company

Prosthe company truly cares about their employees and customers. They are one of the few companies that "delivers service after the sale." They expect their employees to be accountable for their actions during work hours as well as in their personal life. They stress to all employees that the employee is a reflection of Southern Co 24/7. They believe in holding their employees to very high standards w/ a true sense of loyalty and integrity. Family is very important to the company and when making decisions management keeps in mind the effect that changes will make on the employee and their family unit as a whole.

Consmany advancements opportunities are located only in large metro areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you're doing.

Great culture; True Southern Style!

Engineering Co-Op (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at Southern Company

ProsThe environment is great! Very much so like a family in the field and in corporate. The culture is great and Southern Company is committed to doing a great job. Will see Senior Management; they're not hard to find. For the co-ops and interns, we had monthly development meetings with Executives and Management that were really helpful.

ConsThere is a very large age gap. The knowlegde transfer process is a problem. Also, it's all about who you know. If you can get in the right networks and keep your face out there, you'll go where you want to go. If it's not your passion, you will easily get lost in the crowd. And sometimes it get a little too conservative. They are doing a lot better with diversity, but there is still a long road ahead.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou all do a great job with the co-ops and interns, but continue that nurturing relationship when they become new hire; at least a mentor within the company.

good place to work

Engineer (Current Employee)
Birmingham, AL

I have been working at Southern Company

ProsI think the work enviroment at Southern Company is great. Evrybody is nice and respectful. Managers and supervisors are interested in employes not only on a work level, but also in a personal level. They understand when employes need to take care of personal matters. They are also good recognizing when employees do a good job. The benefits are great, better than most companies I know, they match up to 6% of the 401K and have good health benefits. Managers and supervisors are open to listen employees with any concerns and willing to solve any problems. THe buildings and facilities are also nice.

ConsSome times the promotios are different for some people and it seems like it is easier to move up for some. There is people who is been working harder and for longer time and don't get the same promotions. That seems to be unfair, specially when some people is doing a great job that is very important for the company and don't get a promotion, while someone else who is doing just a good job and has been in the company half of the time gets the promotion. The rules about how promotions are granted are not clear to anyone.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure everybody gets promoted on the same basis
