I worked at Southern Company as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Easy going environment, free parking. If you stay here, you will likely be able to retire here with a pension.

    Cons

The easy going environment is quite political behind the scenes. The company operates in a very southern style (no pun intended) where business decisions and support are based upon who you know. There are many, many camps and factions here. If not in the right one, you're toast! Northern and mid-western folks with different life experiences and broader perspectives from other parts of the country may struggle here. Contractors are treated as disposable assets. There is no sense of urgency to get anything done and if you are "on the inside" as an employee, this may be the job for you if you are accustomed to working within the realm of indecision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Value everyone, including contractors

I have been working at Southern Company (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Very laid back atmosphere
    - Flexible schedule
    - Decent Pay
    - Decent Benefits

    Cons

    - Advancing is very political and politics pays more than knowledge.

    - Contract labor is viewed as very expendable and of little worth to most management. No benefits, no training, and no inclusion in most company functions. There is an us and them mentality from most of the company towards contractors.

    - Aging work force is of no concern to management

    - Unless you have a four year degree or a masters, advancement is very limited.

    - Very much still a "good ol boy" network where it's more about who you know then what.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - A large majority of your work force is nearing the end of their career and yet you do nothing about it, this is going to come back to haunt you in the coming years.

    - Get to know your managers. Alot of them are near retirement age and are costing out the door, making them VERY poor managers, and it is becoming a very sore subject for those working under them.

    - More than 1/3 of SCS is operated by contract labor. Some who have been on board for several years and yet you continue to shun them. A lot are getting fed up with it and should the job market open up this could create a lot of turnover.

    - The hiring process is WAY to convoluted. Jobs are being awarded based on networking instead of who is right for the job.

I worked at Southern Company as an intern (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great management that was very interested in allowing you to learn whatever you were interested in. Southern Company very heavily promotes from within and makes it relatively easy for you to transfer between groups and/or subsidiaries

    Cons

Work can be very boring. Power isn't exactly a thrilling industry

I worked at Southern Company full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Job security. Interesting aspects to working in a nuclear plant. Provides a sense of pride since work contribution directly relates to meeting public need. Flexible work hours. 9/80

    Cons

Pay is significantly low with higher work load.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They are fully aware of the high turnover of engineering employees yet continue to do nothing or attempt ineffective strategies (significant effort for hiring of Philippines) rather than actually addressing "Why are people leaving?"

I worked at Southern Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Seriously great people working at this company. Family atmosphere. Relaxed, low pressure working environment. Great benefits. You become very familiar with an industry that many people take for granted. Lots of different areas to work in and you are encouraged to try new things. Made some great friends working here.

    Cons

I left about a year ago and it came down to just feeling stifled in my job. There was a hiring freeze and "cost containment" i.e no training budget. I wasn't really feeling challenged in my job and my skills were getting stale. Combine that with the fact that pay is just perfectly average. Promotions are very hard to come by, and you get caught up in the HR grinder that happens at many huge companies. You have no idea if you are doing what you need to do to advance or not. Looking back, leaving was the right decision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is by nature a conservative company. Many benefits don't really pay off until you have worked there forever. Unfortunately nowadays people don't work anywhere forever, especially in IT. Pay to keep top talent and make sure people are staying up to date with skills and training relevant to their jobs. There comes a point when the comfort of working here and the "stability" is only worth so much.

The people are great and the southern hospitality is second to none. A small community but one that allows for plenty of friends to be made

Very remote location with limited activities to participate in on the weekends. Travel is usually required for weekend trips of any kind.

    Pros

Stability, you can be in one cube for the next 30 years.

    Cons

Culture, the concept of southernnstyle says it all. This company exemplifies the good old boys style of business. I've never seen an environment where cronyism is so rampant and then told if you don't get on board you don't have a future here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the hard decision and address the culture, you can't rely on the weather forever.
