I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very hard working work force at the non management level. The end product is great and a tribute to the work force. The company truly cares about being a good neighbor. Very good benefits and long term retirement.

    Cons

This is the most politically driven company I have ever experienced with no accountability in its culture. Promotions are inequitable and typically given based on gender, race or if you are related to somone at a high level. Most managment are not qualified for their positions. They do not understand the power business and certainaly lack the leadership qualities to lead, coach and motivate others. They typically acheieved those positions based on their connections and do not seem to convery the same message and leadership seen at the highest exectuvie level. Accountability is only passed down and not seen at the management levels. The work force genrally does not trust management. These issues are reasons why this company is desperately suffering from failures at many of their current projects. Upper management is not forthright with its people or its Puble Service Commisions on project status and critical issues. In summary, this company does not walk its talk. It professes to live by a motto of Superior Performance, Total Committment and Unquestionable Trust. The reality is most of the population there hate it and if you are not the right race or gender, and if you do not do alot of butt kissing....you will not succeed.

    Advice to Management

My advice to the board is to bring in an outside CEO that will totally change this culture to one that walks the talk and creates a culture that is accountable and promotions are based on achievments and demonstration of strong leadership qualities. They will need to serioulsy look at its middle management and purge it. Many of its problems in projects and operations is directly a reflection of this poor leadership.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent transfer of knowledge, good benefits such as pension, health insurance, flexible work schedule.

    Cons

Pay compared to other industries it's low. The jobs are usually filled by you know more than what you know, in other words networking is key in this company

    Advice to Management

Try to make more emphasis on paying top dollar to keep too talent

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I can tell why people spend their entire careers here. I have been working at Southern Company for a few years and I really enjoy the work. We are on the cutting edge of technology, always looking for ways to make things run more efficiently. The salary is on par with other companies and the benefits are really great (401k, Pension, etc...) .

    Cons

The workload can be quite high and stressful on occasion. If you don't like you department/boss, try another one in the same company(there are many great ones).

    Advice to Management

Really listen to your employees and let them do their work, but give good feedback and encouragement.

    Pros

Job stability, telecommuting Company volunteers in the community

    Cons

HR Management has vendetta toward specific employees. Organization participates in retaliation, age and racial discrimination.

    Advice to Management

Need new senior management who cares about the employees and not just the bottom line. There are tremendous opportunities for improvement.

    Pros

Mostly great coworkers. Fairly nice facilities.

    Cons

Huge disparity between direct employees and contract employees. False promises of promotions made by management to appease employees when they have no intention of following through. Company takes advantage of contract employees and gives little in return. Poor compensation and no feedback (positive or negative) from management. Some managers are completely disconnected from reality, apathetic, and borderline incompetent. Advancement is very slow, political, and inconsistent. Workforce is older, with most employees within 5-10 years of retirement. The company does not seem concerned with the aging workforce, nor do they seem concerned with hiring in younger employees. Very hard to give feedback to management when they do not value you or your opinion.

    Advice to Management

Quit the contract employee system altogether. Hire younger employees now to prepare for the future. Promote employees who have demonstrated leadership skills into management positions.

    Pros

Well run and managed company. Good opportunities as well as work/life balance

    Cons

Old company with slightly regressive culture

    Advice to Management

Perhaps tone down the "we need to save" message. The company will be fine and telling your employees we're getting rid of your perks because we have no money isn't the best way to retain talent.

I worked at Southern Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Telecommuting, benefits, employees mental and physical health, and work/life balance. SoCo is a great place to be if you are looking for low stress, easy going environment. If you are a person who is a self starter there are immense opportunities to start something interesting to you. Great educational and developmental training opportunities for management and executive positions.

    Cons

Opportunities to be an expert in your field is rare or valued. Much of the management and executives are internally developed with limited experience working in their organization they are managing. Mentoring is rare and promotions come from relationships versus proven skills. Though this is common for many larger organizations. Workforce is seasoned so until you have 10yrs w/ co, you are junior and shrugged off. Very limited accountability for decisions is pervasive.

    Advice to Management

The energy sector and usage is moving and changing faster than ever before. Opportunities to harness innovation and develop new market strategies are hindered due to cultural "Southern Style" behaviors. Measure success more through demonstration and anticipation of the future than meeting the needs of today.
