I have been working at Southwest Airlines full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of growth opportunities and definitely a fun place to work. They definitely invest in keeping you happy and you can feel that as you walk in.

    Cons

On the corporate side, I don't see alot of diversity (specifically African- Americans) among mid- high level leadership.

I have been working at Southwest Airlines as an intern

    Pros

The Perks!!! Free flights to anywhere in the U.S (they have also added Mexico recently). Casual work atmosphere, work hard-party hard culture, friendly & helpful people around, great location

    Cons

My position specifically lacked technical challenges. The internship management could be much better and they communicate less frequently during the application process (understandable due to the number of applications)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give some thought to resource management. Interns can be placed in departments more relevant to their skill set.

I have been working at Southwest Airlines full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You are surrounded by great people who are fun to work with. The senior Leadership has a great shared vision that I agree with and support. A great benefits package some awesome privileges like travel on Southwest.

    Cons

The departments tend to be siloed and it make it hard to get things done at times. With such a significant Union influence at times change can be slow and not always make sense.

I have been working at Southwest Airlines as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Great work culture, lot of opportunities to grow, fun activities all around the year, Deck parties on every Monday with beer snacks and Prizes. Flight benefits.

    Cons

In some departments work from home is not encouraged. Cafeteria is open only for a specific time slot and doesnt have too many options and is crazily expensive. So if feel hungry before or after the lunch hours you will have to drive out of the campus to get some food.

I have been working at Southwest Airlines

    Pros

Flight benefits, coworkers, job opportunity. These are all benefits I enjoyed greatly while working at Southwest.

    Cons

Long hours in sometimes unfavorable conditions. Otherwise, I didn't have too much of a problem with anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speak with your employees to get their insight in on things more frequently.

I worked at Southwest Airlines full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Flight Benefits
    - Amazing People that care about the brand and work hard
    - Customers love the brand too!
    - Growing company with a lot of new opportunities
    - Executives that actually care about you.
    - The company takes care of their people, from weddings to family deaths - my team always had my back.
    - Peanuts!

    Cons

    - Very large company so there are a lot of processes in place that slow things down.
    - A LOT OF MEETINGS, we had meetings about meetings.
    - Not a lot of growth opportunities within my department.
    - Path to leadership is challenging. There are a lot of very tenured leaders that do not impact much, yet have to be included on all decisions.
    - Very stressful at times, the airline industry is exciting...but wears on you after awhile.
    - Not very competitive pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Look for more opportunities to grow top talent.
    - Try harder to retain employees
    - Have a competitive maternity/family program.

    Pros

At this Company I have felt valued as an Employee. The work hours are flexible. The benefits are FANTASTIC. The flight privileges are nice.

    Cons

Nonrevenue travel is very hard since their load factors are so high. The company is very competitive and upward mobility is difficult

I have been working at Southwest Airlines full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of emphasis on culture, work hard & play hard

    Cons

Too lean and overworked. Not equipped to train leaders who come from outside the company. A fraternity type of culture and makes it harder to break the barrier. Workforce is not diverse except for a lot of contractors from India. Myopic of specific style of leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't associate your success to driving & pushing your team to edge and compensating with only a few beers on the company's tab.
