Great place to work, crazy long hours.

    Quality Engineer (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsTightly knit community. Enjoyed 90% of staff interaction.

ConsSome groups are cliquey, just had to ask a lot of questions "around" interview process.

Life was miserable as a contractor.

    Technical Writer (Former Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsThe main complex has an onsite cafeteria with good food.

ConsParamilitary authoritarian atmosphere, matrix engineering management structure, very poor IT support, heavy work load dealt with by whipcracking middle management. Contractors are called temps & treated like chattel. Loral has been bought by MDA, a Canadian company, which was followed soon by multiple rounds of layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementPurge the hostile, ethnically prejudiced middle mgrs. & you will purge the ethnic rivalries & hostility that exist throughout the company.

    Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsVery open management, lots of upward mobility if you put in the time. Very cool product if you are interested in high tech/science stuff, the science behind it all is pretty amazing.

ConsLower end salary for this position when compared to many companies throughout the Bay area. Good starting point though to move on to bigger and better companies.

    Great culture, engaging work

    Communication Vehicle Engineer (Former Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsIt was great to work here as an intern. I was working directly on the satellites in the high bay. The hands on aspect was great and let me learn a lot.

The culture here is really good too. Every one is pretty helpful. Because its a smaller company (~2000) everyone gets to know each other better.

ConsSome of the engineering jobs can be very monotonous. Be careful about what you go into or make sure its something you really enjoy doing.

Advice to Senior ManagementDoing a good job.

    Top Heavy and blind

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsFriendly dedicated employees that work hard to keep the company going. They have a good product that they employees take pride in making. They do a lot for their college graduates. They have a great cafeteria Up to date software.

ConsThey do not appreciate the experience of their mechanical designers and drafters. They would rather get rid of them and hire a newly graduated engineer straight out of college for $35K instead of keeping the experienced. By doing this, it results in a high turn around once the newly graduated find out what they are worth in this area once they gain experience.
They do nothing for those in the company that don't have a degree, no matter how much experience you may have.
If it isn't the answer management wants to hear, they will discard your answer and keep asking until someone tells them what they want to hear, then throw lots of money at it to find out the original statements you had made were correct.

Advice to Senior ManagementA tree structure that has 1 Manager, 2 leeds, for only 2 people doing the work is TOP heavy. Listen to your lower level people. Managers are smart, but they don't know it all. Listen to the new ideas (even if it is not from an engineer) they might be good, save the company money, or provide a new idea of innovation.
Underbidding jobs, then making your salary people work long hours for free may get that job done, but will not keep the employees. Encourage more telecommuting when reasonable.

Incredible to be designing, manufacturing and launching satellites but old male-dominated environment.

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsGenerally, you work with many very nice and talented people. You learn a lot about satellites.

ConsYou work a lot of overtime. The culture is old and very male-dominated. Working remotely is rather shunned upon by most departments that should allow it. The environment is too fast-paced for balancing with family. Bonuses are small and sometimes do not feel worth working so much overtime for.

    Advice to Senior ManagementLoosen up!

    Manufacturing departments ?

    Test Technician Specialist (Former Employee)
    East Palo Alto, CA

ProsThis company has stable employment for anyone that has a degree in engineering or just knows the right people in management. But overall has some success in the satellites that are developed there

ConsI've worked now 5 years in the manufacturing dept. which builds the big harnesses and cables then tests them before packaging and shipping to the other buildings for the satellite assembly. I've never worked in a place like this where the main language was not English. Also department leads and supervisors had broken English with poor communication in training the newer employees and temps working there. In other words it was very difficult and confusing to learn their product or communicate unless you speak their foreign language. I also found that the systems and equipment being used to build the harnesses were old and outdated.
Overall the manufacturing departments can be better and more productive if leaders and supervisors/ managers would spend time and $$ to upgrade their equipment and hire English speaking Americans or just hire a more diverse group of people

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the advice of the assemblers or techs and upgrade their equipment to a more modern system for good productivity and hire professional people that can communicate better to the employees.

Enjoyable staff, lots of opportunities for improvement

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsOpportunity to work on equipment most people never get to see in person. Lots of opportunities to improve and grow the company.

ConsOrganization is a bit fractured from a communication standpoint, however there are lots of opportunities for creating change and improvement.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand what is really a competitive salary for individuals in the local economy, not just the industry.
