    Pros

The company makes satellites so there are many opportunities to learn new things and different branches to expand into They work with you to make the company and your career better You're not overworked and actually have some social life outside of work which was a nice change compared to other Silicon Valley companies

    Cons

Was built off of numerous older companies Not a unified company, different rules for different departments Hard to change the culture to embrace new/efficient design and technology

    Pros

Have worked with some of the best and smartest people in the industry. You can learn a lot about the products as well as the system. In the end, you're working on something thats going to be launched in space. Extremely cool.

    Cons

Management has a ton of issues. Risk averse, top and mid level managers are plenty. None of them accept any kind of responsibility and just pass on the buck to different departments. The right people are never given the opportunity to make decisions yet are held responsible for every issue (most often than not due to management making the decisions). A bureaucratic mess.

    Advice to Management

Need to include people from different industries in management. This will definitely help in improving the culture. Give the engineers options to succeed and provide career guidance. Get away from usual aerospace bureaucracy.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great environment if you work IRAD, BD or even some systems engineering jobs because you have a lot of room to explore and work on a variety of things. Being in Advanced Systems is a great spot, but it can be pretty stressful due to deadlines. The work tends to clump, so there are moments of slow work and other moments where you need to work long hours just to stay afloat.

    Cons

If you are working production, and most of the company is, then it can be a real grind. After you've climbed up the learning curve and are good at your job, it can feel like a treadmill.

    Advice to Management

You need to figure out a way to keep the younger talent at the company. I know it's Silicon Valley and you can't compete with some of the other local employers on compensation, so you have to figure out how to get younger engineers excited about staying anyway. Not easy to do, but if you help them grow in different areas technically you have a chance. Let's face it, they're all space geeks so you need to play to that.

    I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time

    Pros

Because it is a relatively small company, you end up knowing a large portion of the workforce, which makes it feel a bit like a big family. Because it is small, employees need to be able to do a variety of tasks, which keeps the job interesting. I found it to be a very enjoyable place to work.

    Cons

It is a commercial company, competing against satellite manufacturers from all around the world. This can put financial pressure on the company.

    Advice to Management

My manager was very good, he was knowledgable and had a very good attitude. I found most managers good, but there were a couple managers that would have been terrible to work for.
