Very laid back but a time machine back to the 90s

Intern (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsGreat work-life balance with friendly people

ConsFeels like a trip backwards in time with old technology, adherence to an outdated and old-school database, with a lack of drive toward innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementInnovate and grow

    Low chance for career advancement.

Subcontracts Administrator (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsWork with Satellites and interesting technologies. Be a part of something big.

ConsPay does not keep up with economy and pays on the low end of the scale. Outdated mentality, stuck in what works and lags in innovation. High redundancy in both workforce and management. Focues on metrics and making department look good.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower the employee and reward them for success.

Great place to work if you like to work overtime and meet demanding deadlines with multiple responsibilities.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsBenefits provided are great. People are friendly.

ConsWorking on holidays. Overtime on weekdays occasionally and weekends a must.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to be more organized and communicate with other managers so that everyone's on the same page. Management needs to be more professional when speaking to employees. Employee training needs improvement.

Good company to work for in Aerospace, but very old-fashioned

Systems Test Engineer (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsGood way to learn about satellite industry, many departments to work in, leading manufacturer in the industry, fairly stable business

Consvery old-fashioned practices, average age is pretty old 40+, not a lot of growth opportunities, technology isn't very progressive, facility is out-dated

Advice to Senior Managementprovide some more incentives for your employees to stay there (ie. better benefits, freebies, events) have a more family/collaborative environment

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Terrible place to work. Long hours. 24/7

Senior Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsPeople tried their best. Most people did not have a choice.

ConsWithin the 18 months I worked at Space Systems Loral four people in my group passed away. All of heart attacks. The hours were too long. Having to monitor a project 24/7 is just too much.

Advice to Senior ManagementWatch out for your people. When you are going to too many funerals, there is something wrong, dead wrong.

Great for Learning about SPACE and mostly friendly people in a usually low stress work environment.

EEE Parts Engineer (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

    ProsFriendly Coworkers
    Fair and emotionally intelligent management.
SPACE industry (get HIGH learning about the GEO positioned satellites SSL builds)
    Work Life Balance is good

ConsEvery thing moves slowly and to get things done quickly (days) there is a lot of calling and pushing that needs to be done to move an issue through the system of all the people involved.
Relatively low pay and bonus for the skilled high tech workers compared to other companies in Silicon Valley.
Difficult to get improvement implemented because of focus on heritage and keeping what works going instead of innovating.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more careful about labor loading (hiring) during good times. SSL's predictions for the number of contracts to be awarded was super optimistic during 2011/12 period and honestly could have used better judgement in resisting hiring too much. This would have avoided layoffs.

Focus on IR&D to stay current. I plan to build a satellite company in the future and it will be more akin to SPACE X = efficient and cutting edge!

Give you employee's a better bonus or more people will leave the company for better paying careers in IT (software/hardware) and the commercial electronics industry.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
