  1. Good company with great benefits.

    I worked at Space Systems/Loral

    Pros

The other employees are very nice and helpful. The atmosphere is also really nice (many events to get to know other people). The work is straightforward once you are trained.

    Cons

It is difficult to move up. In some areas the work isn't very challenging, which may turn into a bore.

  2. Trying to reinvent itself ...

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral

    Pros

Interesting work, good comradarie among employees, and good work/life balance.

    Cons

Pretty old school with hierarchical management, limited lower level decision authority, nowhere near perks of nearby silicon valley companies, and trying to focus and remain profitable on legacy product while trying to reinvent and facing conflict between these two objectives.

    Advice to Management

Stop mixed messaging, make some tough calls on letting stalwarts go, and respect employees.

    Pros

Amazing place to work with great technical people solving difficult problems. The space business is intense and exciting. Science it at work every day.

    Cons

From my perspective, they do not value the employees. The average age in quite high. Management would like to transform the company into a younger, more innovative entity (their words not mine). But that means throwing many fantastic, intelligent people off the island because they are older. In the process the company becomes something else, something one cannot be proud of. You can't have it both ways.

    Advice to Management

    None from me. Ask HR

    Pros

Open and collaborative work environment, great benefits and compensation.

    Cons

Weak leadership from the head office and most managers. An engineering company that promotes from within to management positions. No common training requirements or accountability.

    Advice to Management

Manage your resources better. Accept and require feedback from the bottom up on senior executive performance. Level all managers against peers, ensuring equal opportunity and expectations from employees

    Pros

You get to design and build extremely large satellites that people use in their daily lives. SSL held onto the old Aerospace culture for a long time but it is now changing rapidly. It's a great time to work at SSL.

    Cons

Still in somewhat of a transition to being owned by MDA. Pay is decent, but not great in general, probably on the higher end for aerospace though.

    Pros

Cool product Lots of space knowledge

    Cons

MDA purchases company, then diverts all profits. Then they claim that SSL does not make any money HR does not treat employees well IT must be the worst in the nation

    Advice to Management

    Good luck!

    Pros

If you love space, you can experience so much! Go experience the Cape Canaveral, or Baikonur Cosmodrome! The individuals and team members have passion, and are smart individuals.

    Cons

Compensation? Terrible, I left the industry the second I got an offer. Excellent performance Reviews = 0.5% raise? No thanks I'm not to sure of some of the leadership, especially on the HR side. I'd like them to be on the cutting edge of industry trends and aware of general tech trends. Intentions are good but top down financial pressure put all the talented people in a bad position. Manufacturing (especially space) is just a tough business to be a part of.

    Advice to Management

Big (and innovative) companies are investing in space technology- you should consider why they are not investing in SSL...

    Pros

Great place to work, especially if you're starting your career. In fact, the company is hiring more and more college grads these days. You get to work on space vehicles, from design, assembly, integration, environmental tests, to launch support.

    Cons

Depending on where you work, the hours may be long, supporting off shifts and weekends. Moving within the company may be difficult. Try to negotiate a good starting salary because raises are hard to come by.

    Advice to Management

Allow your employees more flexibility to move within the company. Practice what you preach - work life balance.
