I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The main complex has an onsite cafeteria with good food.

    Cons

Paramilitary authoritarian atmosphere, matrix engineering management structure, very poor IT support, heavy work load dealt with by whipcracking middle management. Contractors are called temps & treated like chattel. Loral has been bought by MDA, a Canadian company, which was followed soon by multiple rounds of layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Purge the hostile, ethnically prejudiced middle mgrs. & you will purge the ethnic rivalries & hostility that exist throughout the company.

I worked at Space Systems/Loral as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

It was great to work here as an intern. I was working directly on the satellites in the high bay. The hands on aspect was great and let me learn a lot.

The culture here is really good too. Every one is pretty helpful. Because its a smaller company (~2000) everyone gets to know each other better.

    Cons

Some of the engineering jobs can be very monotonous. Be careful about what you go into or make sure its something you really enjoy doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Doing a good job.

Incredible to be designing, manufacturing and launching satellites but old male-dominated environment.

I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Generally, you work with many very nice and talented people. You learn a lot about satellites.

    Cons

You work a lot of overtime. The culture is old and very male-dominated. Working remotely is rather shunned upon by most departments that should allow it. The environment is too fast-paced for balancing with family. Bonuses are small and sometimes do not feel worth working so much overtime for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Loosen up!

I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This company has stable employment for anyone that has a degree in engineering or just knows the right people in management. But overall has some success in the satellites that are developed there

    Cons

I've worked now 5 years in the manufacturing dept. which builds the big harnesses and cables then tests them before packaging and shipping to the other buildings for the satellite assembly. I've never worked in a place like this where the main language was not English. Also department leads and supervisors had broken English with poor communication in training the newer employees and temps working there. In other words it was very difficult and confusing to learn their product or communicate unless you speak their foreign language. I also found that the systems and equipment being used to build the harnesses were old and outdated.
Overall the manufacturing departments can be better and more productive if leaders and supervisors/ managers would spend time and $$ to upgrade their equipment and hire English speaking Americans or just hire a more diverse group of people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the advice of the assemblers or techs and upgrade their equipment to a more modern system for good productivity and hire professional people that can communicate better to the employees.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Opportunity to work on equipment most people never get to see in person. Lots of opportunities to improve and grow the company.

    Cons

Organization is a bit fractured from a communication standpoint, however there are lots of opportunities for creating change and improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand what is really a competitive salary for individuals in the local economy, not just the industry.

I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

By its nature, SSL brings the opportunity to work on satellite programs for worldwide customers with diverse cultural and language backgrounds. There are obvious technical challenges in meeting high tech requirements that bring out the best in engineering talent.

    Cons

Due to its need to keep satellites operational for 15+ years on orbit, there is a tendency to depend heavily on legacy systems, so latest hardware and software are not the driving part of this technology.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral

    Pros

Competitive salary especially considering the area. Good foreign travel opportunities. Launch satellites. Fun job. Good people. Great area if you are into natural beauty (redwoods, beach, Yosemite etc.)

    Cons

Cost of living. Housing prices. Fair amount of politics at work. Not a great place to raise a family considering schools (Stanford is great but K-12 kinda stinks), values, and lack of open land.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speak straight to employees. Ditch the "California nice guy" approach. People can handle the truth. Just give it to them. Improve your health insurance choices

For a company in the Silicon Valley, who makes high tech satellites, the company runs like they are in 1970.

I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Just their end product that they produce

    Cons

People are lifers, therefore change and other approaches to problem solving are limited do to the lack of Silicon Valley experiences and continuous improvements. There is ONLY one way to do things
Fear in the work place, rather yell or put fear into an employee versus working collaboratively
Departments do not communicate and it is surprising satellites get built
Rather catch a quality problem at the end of the process versus root cause and continuous improvement early on
Upper management thinks they are open to change, but things haven't change - poor listening skills and upper management is too far down in the trenches for the employee to do their job or make a decision

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening. Manage and get out of the trenches. IF you hire someone, let them do their job versus doing it for them. All the VPs are too involved in the day to day versus just managing. They have no confidence in the lower managers. The micro management is funny to watch, but it's a shame that employees aren't free to do their jobs due to upper management does it for them
