Current Employee - Software Development in Snoqualmie, WA

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

A software engineering environment that encourages experimentation. Products that make a difference -- we're literally building software that can help keep someone alive. Feels like a small company -- with < 100 people in R&D in Snoqualmie, every one has impact and can change product direction by convincing a few key folks. Management focuses on a manageable work week, so no one is working crazy hours on a regular basis. Snoqualmie Ridge location is beautiful and the reverse commute from the Eastside is painless.

    Cons

Health benefits are more expensive than other tech companies. While company is hiring new software engineers, there are too many products to be built by too few engineers, so lead times are long. Regulatory environment is tough to get used to and can feel frustrating when it's time to release a product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use a portfolio approach to R&D investment: invest in a small number of strategic products and make them amazing. Build a plan that obsoletes the old product lines faster rather than spending time and energy putting bandaids on them.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some incredibly intelligent folk that work here. The flexibility in schedule (depends on manager) has been great. In R&D there are lots of opportunities to learn and work with new technologies. They have foosball and ping pong.

    Cons

A strong, legacy culture that seems completely at odds with the current mission. Disjointed middle and upper management. A lack of vision with some management in particular, costing the company opportunities for market growth. Really poor benefits and advancement opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on getting fewer managers with greater skill and vision. Align all divisions with a clear goal and direction. Work on hiring quality over quantity. Be more Apple than IBM.

    Pros

Great technology & products, fantastic but aging work force.

    Cons

Never know when the axe might fall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senoir management needs to understand that software development always takes twice the time anticipated.

    I worked at Spacelabs Healthcare

    Pros

The company while employing about 1,000 feels small enough that you can easily affect change and have a positive impact. Management is supportive of new ideas and willing to allow employees to try new things if it achieves the company's objectives.

    Cons

Some departments, though not all, have a lack of communication with their employees. This sometimes results in different staff members performing similar tasks to achieve a similar goal. Managers need to communicate more with employees to ensure employees understand short term and long term goals and are aware of what their colleagues are working on to create efficiencies and improve collaboration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve communications within departments and across departments. If employees have a clearer understanding of how their department interacts and affects another, they will find the people to collaborate with to create increases in productivity. managers should also provide more regular feedback to employees. many employees work day in and day out handling difficult situations nationally and globally with few kudos from managers.

    Pros

You can learn a lot about product and process. It's a good place to get experience and move out and on.

    Cons

Not very good pay. Old school management style. Good old boys club. Environments can be very complicated and hard to learn

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys need to really learn new and up to date management and production processes.

  8.

Pleasant place to work, but vast amount of unmaintainable, legacy code, and no desire from management to replace it.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Colleagues
Work can be interesting when not stuck on legacy projects
Work-life-balance good without attracting resentment from those who chose to favour work over life!
    Pleasant working environment

    Cons

Lots of legacy software and hardware products still in use requiring development/maintenance
    Staff morale sometimes lacking
    Below average renumeration generally

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think to the future. Endlessly maintaining current products rather than developing new products leads to an ageing product portfolio and a declining market share. The quickest and cheapest solution to market often turns out not to be the quickest and cheapest solution to market!

    Pros

Environment allowed for self-directed work and experimentation as long as progress was made and communication was open. People were always friendly and helpful as they are all committed to bettering people through the products produced.

    Cons

Company always talking about bringing in new people to help with the overload on current developers. However, Company always seems to be in a hiring freeze and continues to overload current developers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit more to people than bottom-lines.
