I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to learn. Worklife balance. Good team.
Lot of domain knowledge to pickup in healthcare.
     enjoyed some technology expertise

    Cons

Lacks strong strategic management, any new executive leader thinks he know everything and can make chages and messup every product.
They end up blaming team, spend their time and leave
One should understand in product based company experience matters.
    Lot of good people left

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executive managemnent should be smart leader and who is doing taking job.
Unfortunately you are not smart to know who are the real people doing the work and who is right people

    Pros

There are some really good people there although they have checked out or resigned themselves to the situation

    Cons

Lack of management, lying, poor quality of processes (regarding both manufacturing and human resources issues).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be straight with people and quit treating them so poorly

  3.

Pleasant place to work, but vast amount of unmaintainable, legacy code, and no desire from management to replace it.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Colleagues
Work can be interesting when not stuck on legacy projects
Work-life-balance good without attracting resentment from those who chose to favour work over life!
    Pleasant working environment

    Cons

Lots of legacy software and hardware products still in use requiring development/maintenance
    Staff morale sometimes lacking
    Below average renumeration generally

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think to the future. Endlessly maintaining current products rather than developing new products leads to an ageing product portfolio and a declining market share. The quickest and cheapest solution to market often turns out not to be the quickest and cheapest solution to market!

    Pros

Environment allowed for self-directed work and experimentation as long as progress was made and communication was open. People were always friendly and helpful as they are all committed to bettering people through the products produced.

    Cons

Company always talking about bringing in new people to help with the overload on current developers. However, Company always seems to be in a hiring freeze and continues to overload current developers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit more to people than bottom-lines.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A software engineering environment that encourages experimentation. Products that make a difference -- we're literally building software that can help keep someone alive. Feels like a small company -- with < 100 people in R&D in Snoqualmie, every one has impact and can change product direction by convincing a few key folks. Management focuses on a manageable work week, so no one is working crazy hours on a regular basis. Snoqualmie Ridge location is beautiful and the reverse commute from the Eastside is painless.

    Cons

Health benefits are more expensive than other tech companies. While company is hiring new software engineers, there are too many products to be built by too few engineers, so lead times are long. Regulatory environment is tough to get used to and can feel frustrating when it's time to release a product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use a portfolio approach to R&D investment: invest in a small number of strategic products and make them amazing. Build a plan that obsoletes the old product lines faster rather than spending time and energy putting bandaids on them.

    Pros

Good people, relaxed environment, opportunity to help people.

    Cons

Management seems to have lost focus on the people that make the company what it is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Former Employee - Systems Engineer in Snoqualmie, WA
Former Employee - Systems Engineer in Snoqualmie, WA

I worked at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work hours are fairly flexible depending on your manager

    Cons

The difference between a merit increase of a top performer is negligible to that of a low performer, creating no incentive to overachieve.
Product development team spends a significant amount of time firefighting legacy product issues instead of obsoleting legacy products.
No innovation, a follower in the industry instead of a leader
Lack of resources for most projects.
Lack of communication between different business areas
Many employees are close to retirement.
Fresh university graduates are not well mentored and there is no emphasis on career development

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to invest in their top performers and get rid of the low ones. Tolerating low performers forces high performers to leave.
Take preventative actions to keep employees happy instead of waiting until they resign, at that point it is too late.
