    Pros

Positioned so close... to impact the market. Brilliant product conceptualization. Some of the strongest field sales talent in the industry. The new product is beautiful.

    Cons

....But yet are so far away. Picture the clown kicking his hat routine. Spacelabs can never quite pick up the hat. Between product issues, internal issues, FDA recalls, and inconsistent (sometimes absent) messaging, they just can't quite get it together.

    Advice to Management

Go hire back (if they'll have you) all the exceptional Marketing, Clinical, and Sales people you've let go or let get away. Some of your brightest minds now work for Philips, Cerner, Extension, and others.

    Pros

Loyal employees with the passion to build life saving products

    Cons

Poor senior leadership teams with primary focus: revenue.
Pay and benefits: it is hard to find anyone who is cheaper.

    Advice to Management

Focus on delivering quality products that work, not just on revenue.

  6. Helpful (1)

Too much to do. There is a long list of projects and products, but no ability to consistently establish priority

    Pros

Solid long-standing company with a recognized name. Very new anesthesia product. Interesting challenges.

    Cons

There is a lot of time spent on fire-drills and demands of the minute. Leadership does not have the ability to say "no" to new projects. Too much focus on immediate revenue actions. Too much focus on a few big customer needs. Aging monitoring product line.

    Advice to Management

Prioritize. Cut projects (development and business). Establish business and organization goals and stick to them

    Pros

Multicultural environment good with good dedicated people. Activities, sports and gathering to promote relationships and teamwork. Focus on developing technologies and products for patients. Good innovative vision for the future.

    Cons

Challenges with improving legacy process and practices. many new products introduced over the past few years adding to the bolus of effort required. Communication are inadequate at times.

    Advice to Management

Proactive communication needed for each group. HR need to proactively understand the concerns of employees especially welfare and communicate frequently and clearly.

Good bunch of people to work with. Senior management has a fairly good grasp of what the company needs to become.

    Pros

The majority of people at Spacelabs are a pleasure to work with. Office location is in a beautiful part of the Puget Sound area. If you like to contribute to a company that is improving and re-inventing itself, then you'd love working here.

    Cons

If you don't like challenges and obstacles, but want a steady job that never changes, then this is probably not a good job option for you. (at least not in operations or R&D departments) Average pay is probably below market value for most jobs. (Software excluded perhaps.)

    Advice to Management

Get to know the people two or three levels below you early in their tenure, and they will be much more likely to stick around longer. Always remember that retraining a new employee is twice as expensive as holding on to the best talent that you already have. And senior management has made some very good decisions of late, so they deserve some praise for that.

    Pros

For the right candidate, Spacelabs is a great place to work with a diverse, wonderful staff of caring people who take their responsibilities seriously.

    Cons

I would wish that the divisions worked better together; for the most part, they do, but a more "we're all on the same team" feeling isn't always there.

    Advice to Management

Foster that "we're all on the same team" and show that you do care for your employees. Continually taking away what were perceived as benefits and not fighting hard enough with the parent company for your employees is detrimental and demoralizing.

    Pros

nice facility, relaxed environment and work-life balance (when not end of quarter), flexible work hours depending on your manager, nice and diverse people, in-facility manufacturing

    Cons

poor management decisions (politics hinder progress), poor business practices, poor quality of processes, constant firefighting that overloads staff and hinders the progress of new projects, budget seems to be off

    Advice to Management

Make conditions possible for communication on projects that don't have a clear goal. People can't mind-read. Don't let politics hinder progress of projects that could potentially move the company forward and improve the quality of the products and processes.

    Pros

Location if you appreciate the outdoors and the commute if you live on the eastside.

    Cons

The culture here is awful! Not to mention the business is struggling with FDA obligations because it is severely under staffed, continues to hire and keep unqualified personnel, and values profits over compliance. This view is more evident by the volume and frequency of device recalls that have been issued against our newer products.

Salary is below market, no bonus structure for managers or below, PTO is earned but rarely approved, and work/life balance is non-existent if you are in anyway supporting manufacturing operations.

Coming here was not one of my best career decisions. Don't make the same mistake!

    Advice to Management

Address your design, manufacturing, and staffing issues, hire for competence and skill not for who will work for the lowest rate.

You still have good people who care, but your inaction and lack of support is causing them to explore other opportunities.

Lastly, do not throw your staff under the bus for your failures and poor decisions. Those who you depend on will eventually leave you and your incompetence will shine through.
