    I worked at Spansion

    Pros

Flexible work environment with great coworkers who were working hard to make the company profitable. Not much pressure in most roles, though a few roles were completely overburdened.

    Cons

Upper level management made poor strategic decisions and ignored guidelines put in place to cut costs. Very siloed groups - poor communication between them. Morale was very low in workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take your own advice...cut costs for offsites, travel and exec perks like the rest of the company must. It demoralizes the work force to see the execs not taking their own advice.

    I worked at Spansion

    Pros

Most Middle managers take an interest in their direct reports and want everyone to succeed. Rank and file employees care about doing a good job and trying to make a good name for the company.

    Cons

Senior management doesn't seem to understand the current market well enough to guide the company in the right direction. There is confusion on what project should be continued and those that should be cut. It's also questionable as to whether their core technology has what it takes to meet future market needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that there have been massive layoffs at the company: stabilize the environment for the staff that is left; formulate a competent strategy and communicate it to all employees so that they understand what the company is going to do and how they are a part of the plan.

    Pros

    I can't deny it - I am well-paid.

    Cons

Your vacation time is held hostage by market fluctuations in that you are told when you can and cannot take your vacation. A benefit promised to you can be taken away at any time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're going on a "money-saving" spree, make it worthwhile and lasting. Truly evaluate how many employees are needed to get a job done. In many cases there are far too many do-nothings and hard-working employees are let go to "save money". In truth it would be cheaper to retain 5 hard-workers and let go of 10 "cheaper" workers. Review your HR department. Those with serious management concerns cannot even get their e-mails responded to by HR.

I have been working at Spansion

    Pros

Spansion is a great company to work for if you enjoy having time off and not working due to shutdowns, mandatory forced leaves, and layoffs. Thus if you need more time to spend with the kids, a bickering wife, want to take parttime classes, or enjoy working a parttime job, then it's a great place to work. Promotions are on pace with those of other companies although management may vary. You can totally get away with not doing much work and just browsing internet all day as there is not much demand for flash chips these days. Thus you will have ample time to search for other jobs while you wait to be laid off!

    Cons

Downsides include little job security, paycuts, forced leaves, bad food, no bonus, poor management, low morale, no young employees, low stock price.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to really understand the needs of its employees. Decisions are made regardless of employee input. There is absolutely NO transparency. When things go bad, managements needs to communicate issues right away rather than wait and layoff people without much notice.

I have been working at Spansion

    Pros

There is an excellent can-do attitude among almost all employees that fosters innovation and pockets of operational excellence. Particularly in low-cost in-house manufacturing and customer responsiveness, the company does quite well

    Cons

The CEO, Bertrand Cambou, does not apply analytical rigor when making important business decisions. He will bankrupt the company if left in place. The balance sheet is weak, making it uncertain whether the company will be able to survive the current downturn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please improve internal business decision management. We have to get the big decisions--builiding SP1, buying Saifun, suing Samsung--right if the company has any chance to ride out the downturn with our terrible balance sheet.

I have been working at Spansion

    Pros

    Extremely competent and dedicated people.
"Can do" attitude that works wonders even in the most difficult situations

    Cons

Company is quickly going down the drain. Money is in short supply, hiring is frozen, not just new hires but replacements too. As a result some teams have lost key people that have not been replaced, putting even more workload on remaining employees.
As a sales rep I'm constantly fighting an uphill battle in price discussions because even though Nor has different applications than Nand customers still expect it to follow the same price behavior, because Nand, totally commoditized by now, is by far the bulk of the market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on our short term survival issues instead of spoiling your time on far fetched strategic deals and risky technology projects. Stop useless R&D investment in Italy and France.

    I worked at Spansion

    Pros

If you are good at what you do and don't push back, Spansion will pay you fairly and, if you are lucky, promote you. Keep in mind it's a company that rewards heroes and overtime, not working "smart".

    Cons

Most of its practices are from very old internal tradition, and it is pretty ingrown in what it thinks are "best practices". In fact it is marginal or poor in areas that it believes it is strong, such as product introduction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go asset light; there is insufficient size or cash to fund being a technology driver and being a high volume low cost manufacturer.
