I have been working at Spansion full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Renewed executive management team has been in control since 2009. The company is on a growth path now and investing in new memory technology as well as entirely new product categories. The company is providing employees with new and more opportunities for professional development and training. The people here are amazing - some of the smartest and nicest people I've been around.

    Cons

Pace of change and growth could be faster. It is not friendly environment if you like to telecommute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide employees a bit more flexibility in working, like flex schedules and telecommuting options. Company is quite behind in this respect compared to other valley companies.

I have been working at Spansion full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Immediate middle managers are respectful to engineers. Work life balance is decent. Immediate team and coworkers feel like a close knit family. Pay is ok. Do a good enough job to be useful to your boss and they will keep you around and give you job security. Spansion is open to switching your role within the company if you are dissatisfied with the current one and want to try something different.

    Cons

High level executives at vp level view engineers as expendable labor. They manage with negative feedback and like to instill fear among employees. The company culture is all about making aggressive deadlines set by upper management and causing engineers to sacrifice quality of their work. Each department is pit against each other with their own agendas/deadlines so there are inter-dept conflicts. Not much room to grow within a role. It has a big company feel where you will only be working on one portion of a project and feel like just a cog in the machine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the upper executives. Try ruling with positive feedback. Motivate employees with something other then fear and minimize any abusive yelling.

I have been working at Spansion full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - Opportunity abounds -- for the company and for the individual who is motivated and inspiring
    - Smart, but humble executive management
    - Inspirational, smart, and genuinely nice CEO (rare combo)
    - I have a superior manager - one of the best in my career and also one of the best at the company. However, I've noticed that there are a lot of really good managers here. How often do you hear that?!

    Cons

    - IT support is pretty poor
    - Still a few people from the AMD days who've been through the worst of times here that need to recalibrate their enthusiasm up a notch.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jump in all the way with the HMI vision. Invest enough in the disruptive innovation to get us to the next phase. It's the right time.

    I worked at Spansion

    Pros

Honestly none, but after giving some thought I would have to say that you do have some good people from whom you get a deserved respect for your hard work
Great place for contract job as you get more respect as compared to full time employees

    Cons

In experienced Senior management not knowing what is the meaning of thought leader ship and doing lip services for self promotion.
No respect for Experience, Talent, Integrity, Accountability & Dedication
    Too many Directors & VP''s

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose good employees who actually work hard for the company.
Senior management is not fully competent . Have a independent survey to identify incompetent folks that would help to retain good employees at the bottom.
Have a good criteria for promotions , Just not promote people for doing their regular job
Do you need very top heavy organization? Give some thoughts to fix the top heavy structure and balance with some real employees who actually could work which would bring some work & life balance for Employee.

I have been working at Spansion

    Pros

Spansion has gone through a very difficult transition. It all started with the 2009 financial crash and led to firing of almost all the senior management, restructuring, selling extra facilities, bankruptcy then re-emergence. This has all been a positive path and was critical for Spansion in order to be as successful as it is becoming. New executive management is competent and driven to succeed. In most cases you will not be micro-managed at this company. This is good if you already have experience in the field and are a self starter. Pay is good and bonus plans are fair. Work/life balance is good. People at Spansion really do care and there exists a reasonable level of comradely and teamwork.

    Cons

Understand the history of Spansion as AMD, AMD spinoff, and then bankruptcy then new company. There are alot of legacy AMD people/ideas that carry them down with excesses baggage and bad habits form the past. Be aware: In most cases you will not be managed very closely at this company. Often times more management interaction and leadership is needed for people that require more guidance. Senior talent that is not used appropriately, to much focus on the “past” and how the “good old AMD” days used to be. Leadership is needed to get people past that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At Spansion there are lots of very talented resources. Not always clear concise direction on how to use those resources to better help the company. Tend to leave people alone and allow them to function at the comfort level they have managed to create around them. In some way this is de-motivating for some of those people and the people that see it. Work harder to create a more unified culture between Sunnyvale and Austin.
