I have been working at Spansion full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There is plenty to be happy about at Spansion from a business performance perspective. With positive cash flow for consecutive quarters, it is clear that the executive team (post bankruptcy) know what they are doing, however heartless and greedy they have been while doing it.

    Cons

The manufacturing facility is aging and so is the management. There are no opportunities for growth or career progression, as the mid-management team has been set in stone for over a decade. Idle mid-"managers" do a poor job of rewarding excellence and refuse to manage out poor performers.

    Advice to Management

    Clean house

I have been working at Spansion full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

small team, good work, good learning,

    Cons

no benefits, no bonus, conventional (no WFHs), longer promotion cycle, not willing to take risks at all, random shutdowns

    Advice to Management

Management should solve their financial issues with newer and better products rather than giving employees unnecessary forced shutdowns.

I have been working at Spansion full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Have had a good set of direct managers - fair and easy to work for. Telecommuting options. Very nice onsite cafeteria in Sunnyvale. Good benefits, focus on health, training offered/encouraged. Management communication is very good. Bonus plan.

    Cons

After much downsizing, really not any room to grow in the department or transition to other area. I struggle with the lingo of a chip manufacturing company, that was not my background, so some times the corp info and training examples are all Greek to me. Too much forced vacation going on.

    Advice to Management

    Keep communicating well.

I have been working at Spansion full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    1. work-life balance. for people who have kids this is a great place to work for because you can use your kids as excuse to go home early and take days off. single people can't do either of those. 2. most people are nice people, but not all.

    Cons

    1. bad senior management. there is absolutely no (or little) respect for engineers or people who actually do the work. 2. no career advancement. there are way too many vps and managers in this company so unless they get fired there is no way people can get promoted.

    Advice to Management

need to learn to treat the employees with respect.

    Cons

still have lots of legacy; there are lots positive changes but should move even faster.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Spansion full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Renewed executive management team has been in control since 2009. The company is on a growth path now and investing in new memory technology as well as entirely new product categories. The company is providing employees with new and more opportunities for professional development and training. The people here are amazing - some of the smartest and nicest people I've been around.

    Cons

Pace of change and growth could be faster. It is not friendly environment if you like to telecommute.

    Advice to Management

Provide employees a bit more flexibility in working, like flex schedules and telecommuting options. Company is quite behind in this respect compared to other valley companies.

I have been working at Spansion full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Immediate middle managers are respectful to engineers. Work life balance is decent. Immediate team and coworkers feel like a close knit family. Pay is ok. Do a good enough job to be useful to your boss and they will keep you around and give you job security. Spansion is open to switching your role within the company if you are dissatisfied with the current one and want to try something different.

    Cons

High level executives at vp level view engineers as expendable labor. They manage with negative feedback and like to instill fear among employees. The company culture is all about making aggressive deadlines set by upper management and causing engineers to sacrifice quality of their work. Each department is pit against each other with their own agendas/deadlines so there are inter-dept conflicts. Not much room to grow within a role. It has a big company feel where you will only be working on one portion of a project and feel like just a cog in the machine.

    Advice to Management

To the upper executives. Try ruling with positive feedback. Motivate employees with something other then fear and minimize any abusive yelling.
