    Solid industry, ok company

Senior Accountant (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsGood benefits and laid back work atmosphere.
    Mentorship program in place.
Industry with lots of potential when gas prices pick up.

ConsOpportunities to move up, let alone sideways, are few and far between.
Management needs to encourage employee development & communicate with employees better, the only manager that I know did that left.
I find it interesting that SET West has not been officially named "The employer of choice" in the media like Union Gas and the Houston office.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue pushing the mentorship program
Provide training for management so they can become effective leaders for employees.

    Top notch

Senior Accountant (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsExcellent work life balance - 9/80, teleworking and part-time work.
Health - there is a Nurse Practitioner on site and a clinic with two beds and nursing rooms. There is also a gym on sit
Leaders - trustworthy and highly competent.
Mid to Upper-level Management - usually leaves little to be desired.
Great benefits - three weeks vacation immediately; 401(k) matching, pension and bonus.
The company is always seeking to improve and always puts their employees first.

    ConsSalary is okay.
    Little room for growth.

    Finance/Accounting

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsFocus on building leadership skills. Very stable. Upper management cares about employees. You will not feel you are just a number. Your voice will be heard.

ConsTechnical training is limited. Less career advancement. Job rotation only occurs on the top (e.g., Director or VP above), not to the low or middle level.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more money on the technical training for the employees who want to improve or expand their career. Create more job rotation (for low or middle level employees) to broad the employees' skills set if you cannot promote the employee; this is the least the company can or should do.

    Good infrastructure company.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSalaries and benefits are relatively similar to its main competitors and its customers. Being the industry is oil and gas, this means they are typically better than you can get elsewhere. Reasonable vacation, floater days, flexible hours, flexible health benefits and a savings plan with an escalating company match.

The company is not as impacted by commodity price cycles. Management focuses on having permanent staff for the valleys and uses contractors when peak activity periods occur. Therefore job security for permanent employees tends to be higher than what you would seen in the oil or gas producer community.

As an infrastructure company (pipelines, gas plants, gas liquids extraction) primarily focusing on natural gas, the long term growth story is pretty good.

ConsCalgary office has approximately 300 positions and Vancouver roughly another 100 positions. The rest of the positions are in field locations, primarily based in smaller communities in north eastern British Columbia and in north west Alberta. Also east of Medicine Hat. Flexibility with regard to work location, including relocation to Union Gas in eastern Canada or the U.S. is required to open up other opportunities for functional group. Technologists and skilled labour looking to advance to higher positions i.e. management will typically need to rotate through various field locations to progress their skills and knowledge.

Work/life balance varies with the position and the individual. Higher level positions tend to have more emphasis on sacrificing balance to ensure work is done.

As with many infrastructure and utility companies, staff turnover is relatively low. There are many long term employees which has both positives and negatives. Resistance to change can be an issue and opportunities to advance can be limited due to lower staff turnover. That being said, there a demographic shift about to occur due to the number of boomers approaching retirement.
