    I worked at Spectrum Brands

    Pros

Good company to start in. The team was very accommodating and great to work with. My manager allowed me the freedom to work independently but was also very helpful when I needed help.

    Cons

The biggest Con to working at Spectrum Brands was the low rate of pay for interns. Personally, I was only making $12 an hour for a position that would yield close to $20 at an another company. However, I did lack the on job experience at the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Always something new, never boring.
Good deal of freedom as long as you get the job done.
Co-workers are generally interesting and talented (some exceptions, as with any company)
Good experience, you can learn as much as you want to learn and there are usually opportunities to expand your knowledge.
If you work hard you will be rewarded.
    Generally competitive salary.
Generally good work/life balance (can be challenging in "crunch times")

    Cons

Communication within the organization is challenged, many departments do not take time to understand the business as a whole, leading to a silo effect.
Its a large company with no announcements when people join or leave, and no information provided about who does what, subject matter experts, etc.
Company is often slow to reward taking upon additional responsibilities and expanding your knowledge.
Benefits do not recognize same-sex couples, even if they have a registered domestic partnership (WI)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in some company-wide training programs to begin standardizing best practices.
    Recognize high achievers faster.
Provide benefit programs that are fair to all employees.

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, decent hours, average pay.

    Cons

The leadership is weak. Managers didn't have to work, they simply spied on sales reps and tattled to HR. HR department are just corporate cops; they are not there for "humans". Metrics don't measure revenue, just behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't quit. You've got a great gig!

    Pros

Great pay if you can survive the hours. Pay for performance. If you deliver results, you get paid!

    Cons

Work/life balance is a challenge. Too much chaos, constant restructuring and letting go of people. No security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to get some consistency. Organization that survives on Episodic Change. Would benefit their employees significantly if they strived to become a continuous change organization instead!

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Spectrum is always trying to improve, and it offers generous financial incentives to staff members who help it reach its objectives. Lots of opportunity for talented employees who prove themselves to move up in the ranks. In addition, the constant change and improvement initiatives provide great experience for employees who embrace them.

    Cons

Like most corporations, Spectrum is focused on improving profits, and if that means downsizing the workforce it will do so. The company can be very focused on quarterly results, sometimes sacrificing its long-term good to hit short-term goals.
