    Pros

Fairly large organization with an abundance of cross-functional exposure and development.
Extroverted go-getters will be promoted fairly quickly in this place.
A very lean operation that achieves goals with minimal resources or waste; a lot can be learned from the metrics and collaboration techniques between departments.
Leadership makes an effort to connect with all generations of employees, and the millennial group is making the greatest impact at this time. Team-building activities are frequent.

    Cons

Typical corporate mentality of a publicly traded company, no different than others; Although a lot of attention and opportunity is available to the employees, the financials at the end of every quarter will always take precedence and this can be disheartening at times.
Introverts can go unnoticed or even let go if they do not learn how to be more outspoken.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. The company is a good steward of great #1 brands, taking market share, becoming more profitable every day, and increasing the stock value for Spectrum Brands' shareholders.

The real model growth through acquisition, close doors to "save" money, and then acquire more to cover losses

    Pros

It's hit or miss, but depending on the job you hold you might be compensated fairly well.

    Cons

Yet another company in corporate America that grows by acquiring other companies ,gutting them, shutting doors and letting people go, and spending more money than was saved to move the jobs elsewhere. No time to focus on good service or improvements because the teams are so lean that you're lucky to accomplish the day to day.

    Advice to Management

"Lean" teams MIGHT show short term profits, but when service slips and improvement opportunities are missed because people are just trying to stay afloat, don't expect well supported growth; instead expect burnout and higher turnover.

    Pros

Management in certain divisions is top notch, and depending on department there are some great mangers who will give you the room to develop and grow. There are opportunities for advancement as long as your willing to step outside your comfort zone, whether it is location or function. Started out offering 10 personal days and 14 vacation days ; have since reduced the number of personal days though. Overall work-life balance is fairly good depending on your department, typical expectation is 8-5.

    Cons

Significantly below market pay; if you start out at an entry level position with low pay and advance up, HR policies dictate they can only raise your pay by such a percent, hence you will quickly get stuck accepting significantly below market pay if you want to advance. Minimal willingness to invest in their employees in terms of continuing education and their tuition reimbursement program is sub-par at best. Depending on your division, overall culture is extremely lacking, some divisions attempt to create a culture however corporate usually finds a way to negate any gains made.

    Advice to Management

Change your antiquated HR policies; as the economy and employment starts to recover you may be in for an awakening on your compensation and the caliber of employees it will attract and retain

    Pros

Good company to start in. The team was very accommodating and great to work with. My manager allowed me the freedom to work independently but was also very helpful when I needed help.

    Cons

The biggest Con to working at Spectrum Brands was the low rate of pay for interns. Personally, I was only making $12 an hour for a position that would yield close to $20 at an another company. However, I did lack the on job experience at the time.

    Pros

Opportunity to take full control of your day to day work with little management. A lot of exposure to an overwhelming amount of business functions.

Easy to get along with most people.

    Cons

Compensation is terrible and constantly complained about on a corporate scale. Far below national average across all sales & marketing roles. Incentive plan seems attractive but will set you up for failure due to lack of support. Impossible to fully execute on business opportunities.

Extremely fatigued morale and the opportunities for growth are unrealistic. Common theme of "being spread too thin". Lean organizational structure.

    Advice to Management

Either inflate the compensation budgeting otherwise the only thing getting inflated will be life boats for this company.

    Pros

Our customers, clients, end users, and accounts.

    Cons

Management merged two companies as a result of acquisition and awarded management of their National Hardware division to their Black & Decker division...whom had no idea how the hardware division operated???

    Advice to Management

Too many high salaried managers whom perform no function whatsoever to bring capital flow into the company. The managers promoted their friends and allies blindly.

    Pros

Great people, work/life balance after awhile, exceptional managers. Initially, our closing period was 9-10 hour days. Managers worked to reevaluate how various procedures were done to reduce accounting close to 8 hour days. Innovative thinking helped make work better for everyone.

    Cons

As time goes on, workforce is being reduced and fewer people are being asked to do more work. Not retaining employees for long periods of time hurts a company in many ways. Many employees are moving on to find better working environment elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Increase your back office staff, because it is getting too lean. Sales can't do their jobs effectively without proper support. Don't wait for your bottom line to be affected before taking action.

    Pros

People were generally nice and helpful. Expectations were clear. The company is flexible with work schedule and needing time off. Received a $500 holiday bonus.

    Cons

Gross under compensation for position. Company used college-educated temps to cover extra workload rather than hiring regular employees. Everything was about cost-savings. No holiday pay or vacation time. No upward mobility. In general things are tight as the company is just getting back on its feet after bankruptcy. Everyone was on edge as upper-management was constantly shuffling and people were losing their jobs.

    Advice to Management

If you want to retain the best talent, you have to compensate them fairly.

    Pros

You get to work and associate with some very bright people. Pretty good culture, although it has gradually deteriorated in recent years.

    Cons

It seems that schedules and timelines are more important than quality. You get penalized for missing a date but not when you are responsible for a major screw-up and product recall. Unless, of course, you don't make the schedule.

    Advice to Management

Experience cannot be taught, only earned. Appreciate and cherish your experienced older employees, they are well worth it. Do you realize the value of having employees retiring from your company? When was the last time that a retirement event was held at the Lake Forest facility? When will the next one be? Not any time soon for sure.
