Great healthcare system to work for

    I worked at Spectrum Health

    Pros

Spectrum health is a great place to learn and grow. There are plenty of opportunities to move up within such a great healthcare system

    Cons

The turn over rate for lower level jobs is pretty high. The company isn't very understanding when you are under a probationary period, but health issues come up

  6.

Upper management totally unaware of what is going on in the organization.

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You can laugh at all of the bobble heads that work around you and are afraid to tell management anything other than what they want to hear.

    Cons

Lots of money spent on facilities, but minimal money invested in systems and infrastructure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop patting yourselves on your backs. Get rid of your bonus program for management, and invest the money in infrastructure/ systems.

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Good at working around school.

    Cons

Co workers end up relying on you more than they should, the people you are working with do not understand what exactly you do and don't understand when you are busy. They act helpless when surely they could grab an item for themselves if the tech is running labs or in a trauma. Then they go to management and complain about you "not being a good worker" and you'll get written up. Just like that, even when you have communicated clearly what is happening. Management do not care about your side, if you are newer you will just get written up. I feel PSTs should get paid more for what they have to juggle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Must educate staff to remember the teamwork aspect Spectrum stands for many people in the O.R. have forgotten. This job depends on learning so much "on-the-job" information, supporting growth is more effective than just an immediate write up. New hires are bullied by older employees who have worked for many many years. This is not the Spectrum Health I hoped it would be when I requested employment. I was disappointed in how little management is involved with negative coworker interactions. PSTs should be compensated more for what they have to juggle.

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some flexibility, good health benefits, great people to work with.

    Cons

Leadership in IT is driving talent away from this organization. There is a distinct fear culture in areas of IT that makes people want to leave. People are promoted who have no business being leaders and this type of behavior also drives talented people away. Too much management shuffle at director levels makes teams disorganized and focused more on hierarchy than achieving goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When whole teams of talented people and large groups of developers and architects leave "Houston you have a problem!". Pull your heads out of the sand and do something. Ignoring this won't make it go away.

I have been working at Spectrum Health

    Pros

Docs and co workers were great. Great experience and learning environment in an efficient atmosphere.

    Cons

Under appreciated and under paid. High turn over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your nurses better and they will stay for the long haul. All nurses I know that have left the organization have due to pay and appreciation.

I have been working at Spectrum Health as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with, pretty good technology for a healthcare company, great location in Grand Rapids, good opportunities to advance in IT, good purpose (healthcare)

    Cons

Typical big company politics, some mis-communication between business side and technical side of the company, each team uses different technology (especially the separation between Priority Health side to Spectrum Health side) causing messy integration

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rely less on contractors and more on the FTE's, make concrete decisions on technology being used, continue to merge Priority Health technology with Spectrum Health Technology

Former Employee - Senior Human Resources Consultant in Grand Rapids, MI

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Providing healthcare services and having a job are the only pros that I can think of, unfortunately and candidly.

    Cons

Many individuals are overlooked or flat out ignored when opportunities for development present themselves. Instead many leaders' favorites are chosen for positions that they have not earned and in many cases are not qualified. Take a look at its diversity stats in professional and leadership roles . . . very telling. Turnover is concerning. Unfortunately it is as if most of leadership walks around, knowing they and the Emperor have no clothes on, yet just looks above the shoulder and collect their pay and bonuses while HOPING no one says anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior execs need to Get it together and start serving as effective leaders. Strategic objectives, the collection of objective data to analyze and make sustainable changes, etc.
