I have been working at Spheris
Pros – Equipment and resource programs provided. Flexible hours and working at home. Benefits, even though high medical deductibles, but better than none.
Cons – Compensation at Spheris is ridiculously low. I made minimum wage the first 2 years, working very hard. Finally, got up to a decent $12-14/hour, and when the company instituted speech recognition with a lower pay rate for SR jobs, I'm back to around $8 to 9/hour. Lousy pay, in addition to having to be "on call" for holidays when there is no work and having to to take your paid time off if you want to get paid, is tremendously frustrating and discouraging. Also, no pay when the programs mess up, i.e., transcriptist "pay" in lost time and dollars for technical difficulties, and there are many.
Advice to Senior Management – I wholeheartedly agree with the person who wrote, "Spheris needs to value their employees more and show them they are valued by increasing pay rates instead of decreasing them. Speech recognition pay needs to equal or exceed transcription pay." You are taking advantage of people who don't have any other choices, i.e. desparate to stay home with children and/or rural employees with not many opportunities, (especially in this economy), and most likely are making a mighty fine living off of us!

I have been working at Spheris
Pros – Working from home is a definite plus. The company provides the equipment and software necessary to do the job. Another plus is being able to flex your schedule should the need arise.
Cons – Compensation at Spheris is poor. I am making less now than I did 9 years ago and working harder. When questioned about possible pay rate increases, the company responds with "work harder and you will make more money." A few years ago we had a good health insurance and vision insurance package but that was changed to less coverage for more money on the employees part. Also, recently the company stopped contributing to our 401-K plan. The company instituted speech recognition with a lower pay rate for SR jobs than transcribed jobs which is totally unfair as the SR jobs often take longer.
Advice to Senior Management – Spheris needs to value their employees more and show them they are valued by increasing pay rates instead of decreasing them. Speech recognition pay needs to equal or exceed transcription pay. Spheris is going to lose a lot of good employees if they don't make some changes soon.

I worked at Spheris
Pros – They pay reasonably well in this field and have benefits.
Cons – Poor technical support. Demand for overtime, at one time 4 hours per day mandatory.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire people who know what the work requires and are familiar with labor laws.

I worked at Spheris full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – The best and big company in INDIA in Medical Transcription when I joined in 2001. As I was just 19+ it was more like a college for me where I got some Very Good Colleagues, I did quite a lot of changes in my Personal Life through the Decade I spent in Spheris (Healthscribe when I joined).
I have a great RESPECT for the Company which was besides me from when I was a Boy until I was a Man.
Cons – Hmmm, that I forget over time as I do not remember bad things. Anyways, Pros were lot more than Cons except growth....
Advice to Senior Management – Love your employees who are pillars of the company....
