Cons* Not at all challenging environment
    * HR hardly makes any effort to make place competitive/fun compared to other companies in bay area
    * Compensation is nothing compared to other companies
    * Hiring top talent is impossible because of the reasons above

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease don't Save a Penny, Loose a Dollar

    Good people to work with.

    Manager (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsNear zero politics. People truly enjoy working together and helping each other.

ConsPeople not held accountable. No penalty for failure. Results show it but nothing changes. Competition continues prevail.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeams are so distributed, everyone (product manager all the way to CEO) spends all their time traveling - meetings constantly cancelled or postponed - little real work gets done.

Overall a decent place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsFlexible Schedule. Training opportunities in technologies are there if you ask. Friendly atmosphere.

ConsCompany product training is sorely lacking. It's all this self paced online materials that don't go nearly as far as it needs to in order to develop the necessary skill-sets to perform in the role. Company seems unstable at times, constantly acquiring other companies and bringing them into the fold, with the results not being what they expected.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of continuously looking for that next new feature, lets work on making what we have bullet-proof. Our customers expect our products to simply work. Improve internal training...get our training department in the business of training our employees instead of always looking for revenue. The online self-paced materials simply don't cut it. And finally, STOP with the outsourcing...our customers want to work with the experienced support staff in the US based Backline Teams. We are already getting complaints from customer about this so called "Global Backline Team". You cannot replace years of experience with a group of green Network Engineers in India.

Great Company You've Never Heard Of

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsGood size - big enough to be more stable than start-up, but small enough to not be too beaurocratic
    Incredibly intelligent co-workers
    Overall good environment

ConsStill struggling with "silo-ism" from patchwork of past acquisitions
Communications blockages still in some areas of the organization - but improving
    Rough entry/onboarding for new employees

Advice to Senior ManagementStay humble - you're really good at some things, but need to keep improving as leaders of the organization, from the first line supervisors all the way through C-suite. Good progress over the last couple of years, so keep it going.

The experience is what you make of it

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsCould be a great environment depending on your manager & team
    Casual atmosphere
    Flexible schedule
Training or resources for improving skillset are available if you ask for them
Opportunities to work on more challenging projects if you can make the business case for them

ConsCompensation & benefits are on the low end of tech jobs in Silicon Valley
    Internal politics & big egos
Old school way of thinking & executing solutions
Undefined career ladder - you will need to be able to negotiate and advocate for yourself. This might be true of most companies, however.
    Too many silos

Advice to Senior ManagementLeave your ego at the door. Be a leader, not a "boss"
    Stop using antiquated metrics
Use a more rigorous process for vetting candidates. Bad hires can cost a lot of time, money & resources and worst of all, lower employee morale.

    Not bad vs other competitors

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

Pros1. Cutting edge techology - a lot to learn, and there is training to help you
    2. Diversed product profolio
    3. (Many) people have a life outside work

Cons1. ESPP with no discount or sharing matching
    2. Not a huge company but some dept. behave like they are part of one.

Advice to Senior Management1. Invest more in company and its people.
    2. Budget shall be spent wisely but not by missing opportunities

    Nice place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsVery bright people who are laid-back and down to earth. An environment that is not overly political, and challenging work to go to every day.

ConsBattling silo-ism, and need to continue to open up the free flow of information through out all lines of business and levels

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep working on improvements to the organizational structure, the skill of management at all levels, and communications

Nice place to coast along in your career, but not for ambitious, driven types.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsThe work life balance at Spirent is excellent.
The teams are very good - there was very limited politicking and backstabbing.

ConsThe company has been struggling for a while (as of 2011), so pay tends to be under-competitive, and promotions are hard to get.
It is a standard mid-size unexciting Silicon Valley company - very "Office Space" like. There's no excitement of the sort you get from being in a sexy new startup or in developing something that's going to change the world. It's pretty much do your work and go home, which is great if you want to focus on other things besides just work though.
