    Decent Wagees. Union Representation

    Cons

    Still the same management as when it was Boeing. They still think the X style of managing (threatening emplyees and keeping them in the dark) is the way to do business. Very backwards and behind the times

    Advice to Management

    Get your employees involved in every step of the process and pay attention to their ideas They could make and save the company a lot of money.

    Pros

    Great benefits and a decent paycheck for the experience.

    Cons

    The management puts concerted effort into disrupting the shop workflow so they can offer minor improvements later to appear as if they are working. Pay attention to OSHA regulations, as the management neglects safety procedures to keep the line moving and try to cover up accidents.

    Advice to Management

    Pay more attention to your own jobs and stop trying to leave your mark on your department.

    Get out with the Boeing mentality and get on board with the Airbus mentality.

    Pros

    You get paid every two weeks.

    Most workers are hired off the street to build aerostructures and the closest they have ever gotten to an airplane is the time one flew over their house. The QA department is made up of meat inspectors from the local meat packing plants and have no idea as to what quality aerospace work looks like, much less how it is done. The few experienced people that do have are not considered for a position in management because knowledgeable people are a threat to upper management jobs. The most popular qualification for becoming a member of management here at the Kinston, N.C. site is experience in making hot dogs, you can't make this stuff up, I am being serious. We refer to our managers as "wiener slingers" because that is the only thing that they are truly good at. Then there is the union. The company allowed to IAM to waltz right through the front door and pretty much take over. The union now forces the company to keep on people who come in drunk and/or high on drugs. I have seen people, including members of management, get suspended 3 or 4 times for being drunk on the job before being fired. FYI: only hourly workers are fired for such conduct, not managers, they are reprimanded and sent home for a few days. The union also negotiated away a very generous matching 401K plan in which we were 100% vested in from day one of employment in favor of a retirement plan that pays a whopping $0.35 an hour into a union sponsored retirement fund. Top pay had no ceiling before the union, but was negotiated down to $18.50 per hour with a whole $0.50 per year pay raise guaranteed each year until you reach the $18.50 mark. Spirit claims to pay competitive wages for the area. They are honest about that part. They pay about the same as Lowes and Lenox China, but they pay about half what Mt. Air Cargo pays, which is right next door. sadly, the security guards make about the same as the production makes. All in all it is a poorly run company that is in deep trouble if someone does not wake up and realize that their current business model is a blueprint for complete and udder failure. Incompetency runs rampant from the top, all the way down to the low man on the totem pole. These reasons are why i am soon leaving with my 23 years experience and going to work at The Cherry Point rework facility and hour away.

    Advice to Management

    My advice to management? Get rid of the 99.9% of the managers that only have just enough sense to keep from crapping in their pants and promote the good people from the floor that have experience in building this stuff and have displayed good leadership qualities. But you will not do that because if your in upper management and your reading this, you probably fall right into the wiener slinger (Kinston) or burger flipper (Wichita) category and don't have the mental capacity to comprehend what is written here.

    Great pay and benefits. Some good people.

    Cons

    Company values are almost only based on profit. Allot of the union people don't mind their own business, always concerned about when someone else is doing, mainly because management has forced them against each other comparing their performance to each other. Personal growth is non-existent unless you take advantage of their tuition reimbursement program. Some areas in the machine shop are great to work for, other areas have people who are hard to work with. If you haven't been with the company more than 5 years your opinion doesn't hardly matter.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your young professionals as well as your seasoned professionals. Make some standards that everyone has to follow. Go see what is happening on the shop floor instead of trying to figure it out on your computer screens. Make your ethics and values just as important as profit.

    Pros

    If an hourly employee, you cannot beat the benefits. Finding health insurance like this anywhere else is the area has become impossible. This also means this will probably change soon. I was foolish and took a management role where I was viewed as a threat and they found a way to get rid of me. As an hourly worker, it is almost impossible for them to "get rid of you". In management, its a revolving door. STAY IN THE HOURLY WORKFORCE!!!!

    Management is hit and miss. Some are great while others are absolutely horrible.

    Advice to Management

    Honestly, nothing good is going to come and all managers know it. This new CEO has targets and goals and they will be met and no one will stop him. Even if it means completely dismantling the company piece by piece to squeeze every dollar out of every share he can get. Even his senior team that he has brought in from outside the company fear being called to his office and these are seasoned executives. This company went from having a CEO who was driven by the value of employees and what they do for the company to a CEO who has a goal of per quarter share value at all cost. Many employees with valuable knowledge and experience are jumping off this ship like rats off a sinking ship. I even know one employee (experienced engineer) who they let go because "they were no longer needed" who they called back to work because they were lost in that dept without her. After being back 2 months, she quit because the environment had become so toxic. Everyone was working job scared, sharpening their resumes, and feared for their job everyday. The culture has gone down the toilet with this new CEO. Until this changes, and if in time (before the company is dismantled), the company culture will continue to decline.

    Pros

    Pay and benefits were always pretty good compared to other companies in industry and area.

    Cons

    Due to early management / contract decisions, very poor life/work balance. Middle management, particularly, worked like dogs, resulting in many turnovers.

    Advice to Management

    Strive for better life / work balance for employees, and listen to their improvement suggestions. It will pay dividends in the long run. Need more realistic expectations on new programs.
