I worked at Spoleto Festival USA as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Great place to network, great place to learn. As an international theatre festival, you meet production companies and artists from around the nation and world. You work with crews from around the nation. The environment is light and enjoyable to balance the hard labor we do to keep the festival running. There is always time to enjoy the beautiful city of Charleston. Management takes care of the employees to make sure they get proper food and breaks despite long work hours. Compensation is excellent and housing is provided for out-of-town festival employees.

    Cons

Hours are long and work is demanding. You have to be fit and willing to work extremely hard.

I worked at Spoleto Festival USA as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Good quality of shows and a well known festival. Able to see most shows for free. Also, Charleston is a gorgeous city and the weather was beautiful.

    Cons

Terrible pay and dorms we were put up in disgusting. Had to pay for own travel arrangements. Full responsibilities of job not explained prior to arriving and were expected to take on more work than agreed to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better pay and/or living conditions for all employees. Too much disparity between artists and crew.

I worked at Spoleto Festival USA

    Pros

Everyone's passionate, engaged, and truly excited about what they are doing and the programs they offer. It's a great place to be- for work and for play.

    Cons

Most of the positions are seasonal, as one should expect with the arts festival scene, but they are also very loyal and eager to hire back good workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to hire as many competent apprentices as possible. It's definitely a difficult process, but it always pays out in the end with a few good men.
