I worked at Sport Chalet full-time

    Pros

Very relaxed setting. Respectable and fun people. Knowledgable staff and plenty of places to eat nearby. Very nice and clean building.

    Cons

Unfortunately due to the sale of the company, there were no raises for quite some time. Very little to complain about.

    Advice to Management

I have nothing to say for management. The particular department I work for is great and I enjoy my time there.

I have been working at Sport Chalet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, pro-deals, flexible hours, great training programs, certifications. Good for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Helps you build skills across the sporting industry. Great products with good discounts.

    Cons

Mediocre pay, poor organization, asks far too much from employees. Labor caps and poor staffing budgets often require that you work strange shifts with little coverage. No yearly raises.

    Advice to Management

Labor caps often hurt the experience of employees and shoppers alike. Having only one person running three departments prevents employees from helping customers in a timely, efficient manner. Customers and employees are often left unhappy.

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time

    Pros

Great perks such as free lift tickets, scuba certification, kayaking, and other rentals.

    Cons

Pay raises few and far between if at all and not worth the wait.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and don't hinder creativity.

    Pros

Not much. Friendly people, free parking?

    Cons

Terribly underpaid, no room for growth. New ownership completely disregards us and offers no incentive to stay on.

    Pros

-Nice stores, higher end products -Paid workshops for employees to learn about new products and gain new skills -Most store-level management are nice people -Meet new people daily -Stay up to date on equipment/products/etc -25% employee discount after 90 days -Previously flexible scheduling

    Cons

Four months after being hired, I was offered a promotion to a Department Head, which oversees an entire department and its employees. I was listed as such on the schedule for two months following said offer, and I was given all responsibilities associated with the position. Come to find out, I was never actually promoted and was just given the run-around. I was never told about this, but instead I found out after the weekly schedule came out and I noticed my hours were cut from 39 to 22 without explanation (department heads get full-time guaranteed). I wouldn't have had a problem with this if I had just been told early on that I wasn't actually given the position after all, instead of leading me to believe otherwise for two months. Sport Chalet was bought out by a corporation in about July of 2014, and since then the new guys have made drastic changes to streamline revenue. They cut multiple full-time employees at every single store down to part-time, some of whom had been working there for 10+ years. Hours are scarce there now and the pay is abysmal. The focus has shifted from customer service to pushing more and more sales, credit cards, and rewards cards (something we were explicitly told would never happen). The stores are now poorly staffed where often one employee is expected to cater to each customer in multiple departments at the same time. Not to mention that most of the good employees are now searching for new employers and management is seemingly only bringing in young kids who don't mind working 5-10 hours a week for 50 cents over minimum wage. Right before I left, they were working on implementing a scheduling software that tracked every detail of your workday: units per transaction, number of customers serviced, square footage of your department(s), how many credit cards you sold, and much more. It would not take into account your customer service abilities or customer satisfaction. From there, a computer would pop out a schedule based purely on your performance by these numbers. If you had a slow day, you could potentially lose hours next week. You would essentially be competing for hours with your co-workers based on how much you sell and have every detail of your workday scrutinized. Some people may thrive on this type of atmosphere, but it definitely wasn't for me. -Communication from the corporate level to management is terrible and communication from management to lower level employees mirrors that. -You don't make enough to fully enjoy the 25% employee discount unless you're a manager -Aside from moving from a sales associate to a department head, there do not seem to be enough positions above that to move into

    Advice to Management

Improve communication to lower-level employees. Treat employees with more respect. Fire someone instead of giving them literally zero hours for weeks on end until they quit.

I worked at Sport Chalet part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent discounts, prodeals, and free rentals. Friendly co-workers and good managers. They were very flexible with working around school schedules.

    Cons

As with any retail store environment customers would be the worst part about working here. Can be difficult to move up.

    Advice to Management

Stop the strict dress code requirements. To this day I can not wear a polo shirt without feeling like I am going to work.
