I have been working at Sport Chalet

    Pros

    -Pro Deals
    -Fun coworkers
-The staff is very encouraging on getting you to try new things and get outdoors more often
    -Pay is decent

    Cons

-The way that they grade you is completely performance based, which I both agree and disagree with. My knowledge on store product may be 10 times more than someone else in my department, but if they sign someone up for more action passes then they will get the hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensate for staff members knowledge on product and their customer service skills as well as their performance.

I have been working at Sport Chalet part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Easy to get hired. Great discounts on merchandise.

    Cons

Like many retail operations there is a huge disconnect between corporate and mid level management, which may be due to recent sale of sport chalet. management is lacking in consistency with customer service depending on the store. No uniform way to track employee performance in sales, so managers do not really know who is doing a good job and for how long. Managers are hired only to 'crack the whip'. Yelp reviews tell volumes. Priorities are to push credit cards, reward programs, and certain merchandise called effort items. These sign ups and effort items are how a good employee is given recognition. The training of new employees is weak to non existent. You have to figure it out as you go along meaning you can get fired for something you were never trained to do. No team identity for non management employees, and management rarely try new things to not get yelled at by their bosses. This results in little pride to work for what was once a great company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in building a team mentality. Service at each sport chalet varies based on sales rank, so that means you are not getting the most out of your high volume stores. Increase incentives of low level employees. Let new hires know if they complete certain steps and goals they can be promoted. It might help that high turnover...

    Pros

Had an ok discount while working there.

    Cons

Boring, not fun, and really slow business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

look to sell guns and ammunition, even though the founder didn't believe in it. It would bring in customers. Got asked about guns and ammunition quite a bit while working there.

    Pros

large company, area to move and relocate to different places. With this being said, there are plenty of rules in place to allow minimal flexibility, so if you do not conform to one rule you are written up or let go. Yes this is critical to control the fire in any company, but with inexperienced management running he show they seemed to have a skewed view and no realistic expectations.

    Cons

inexperienced management and unmotivated staff slowed certain processes at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to your employees and don't talk down to them like they are inadequate personnel for certain business functions.

  10.

This was a slightly above-average sporting goods store job.

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

SC does a good job within separate departments of finding people who know what they're talking about. They offer quality products and have a good return policy. They offer good benefits and discounts to employees, and there is a good team-oriented feel within each department, so that you can grow as a member and learn from others. SC also offers job training to employees specific to their department.

    Cons

This is basically a department store job and you're often in a mall, so the atmosphere can feel a bit stale. The communication between managers and lower-level employees is not always very solid, and as an entry-level hire you can feel in the dark, like you have to earn your stripes to be heard, depending on your manager. Between employees, as many of them are young, it can get kind of clique-y.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I suggest improving communication across-the-board, and training managers on their people skills, especially around stressful times of the year.

    Pros

Great employing pricing on products. Discounts below wholesale.
Deals on Lift Tickets and Season Passes.

    Co-Workers friendly and easy going.
Great job for a young person still in school.

Learned a lot of product knowledge which was very helpful working with the customers.

    Cons

Company has no direction. Expects unrealistic goals.
Staff is extremely unmotivated. Mostly because of the corporate atmosphere.
Not many advance opportunities. If you do get the opportunity it is with a very minimal pay increase.

COMPANY HAS A RAISE FREEZE. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET A RAISE.

Managers don't really care about the employees, they just look out for themselves.
Such a relief to get another job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Advice to corporate.
How can you not give your employees a raise with the inflation the way it is??
This place should be reported to BBB.
This company has no motivation to better itself.
I would not be surprised if it went out of business or sold out to another sports goods company.
