    I worked at Sport Chalet

    Pros

Had an ok discount while working there.

    Cons

Boring, not fun, and really slow business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

look to sell guns and ammunition, even though the founder didn't believe in it. It would bring in customers. Got asked about guns and ammunition quite a bit while working there.

    Pros

large company, area to move and relocate to different places. With this being said, there are plenty of rules in place to allow minimal flexibility, so if you do not conform to one rule you are written up or let go. Yes this is critical to control the fire in any company, but with inexperienced management running he show they seemed to have a skewed view and no realistic expectations.

    Cons

inexperienced management and unmotivated staff slowed certain processes at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to your employees and don't talk down to them like they are inadequate personnel for certain business functions.

  5.

This was a slightly above-average sporting goods store job.

    Pros

SC does a good job within separate departments of finding people who know what they're talking about. They offer quality products and have a good return policy. They offer good benefits and discounts to employees, and there is a good team-oriented feel within each department, so that you can grow as a member and learn from others. SC also offers job training to employees specific to their department.

    Cons

This is basically a department store job and you're often in a mall, so the atmosphere can feel a bit stale. The communication between managers and lower-level employees is not always very solid, and as an entry-level hire you can feel in the dark, like you have to earn your stripes to be heard, depending on your manager. Between employees, as many of them are young, it can get kind of clique-y.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I suggest improving communication across-the-board, and training managers on their people skills, especially around stressful times of the year.

    Pros

Lots of fun, great people, great benefits. Working in a fast paced enviorment, Get to learn about and try any sport or activity you could want. Great college job.

    Cons

More likely than not you will be smarter than your boss. Pushy about sales, and pushy about the wrong sales. They are more focused on the 5 dollar add on than the 1000 ski package.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    more sales-based training

    I worked at Sport Chalet

    Pros

Great employing pricing on products. Discounts below wholesale.
Deals on Lift Tickets and Season Passes.

    Co-Workers friendly and easy going.
Great job for a young person still in school.

Learned a lot of product knowledge which was very helpful working with the customers.

    Cons

Company has no direction. Expects unrealistic goals.
Staff is extremely unmotivated. Mostly because of the corporate atmosphere.
Not many advance opportunities. If you do get the opportunity it is with a very minimal pay increase.

COMPANY HAS A RAISE FREEZE. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET A RAISE.

Managers don't really care about the employees, they just look out for themselves.
Such a relief to get another job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Advice to corporate.
How can you not give your employees a raise with the inflation the way it is??
This place should be reported to BBB.
This company has no motivation to better itself.
I would not be surprised if it went out of business or sold out to another sports goods company.

    Pros

discounts, pretty much the only benefit. half of lift tickets at mountain resorts. generally 20% off wholesale on most sports gear. so if you want to maintain this job as part time for the discounts and side income it's cool.

    Cons

no raises. no incentive to excel at your job.

I have been working at Sport Chalet full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Sport Chalet is a fun place to work. The overall quality of the employees is great and everyone seems to like what they do. Sport Chalet is a great place to 'learn the ropes' and gain experience managing a multifaceted business. Every person makes a huge impact and everyone is dedicated.

    Cons

The departments are understaffed and every person is expected to carry a very heavy workload. Overtime is often required. The general consensus is that Sport Chalet pays below industry average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management is to provide better training to new employees and set more realistic expectations of what the staff can accomplish given the limited resources. Staff retention in general would be improved by doing more 'little things' that improve morale.

    Pros

Great deals on products through prodeals, free equipment rental, free wax.

    Cons

Department segregation, poor training, not much room to grow especially when hired as seasonal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training programs are outdated and videos need to be re-done or changed to actual on the floor training in detail. Don't just throw them in it.
