Fun sports driven culture

Part-Time Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Mission Viejo, CA

I worked at Sport Chalet part-time for more than a year

ProsFun atmosphere for anyone who loves sports and outdoor culture. Discounts on equipment are a plus. Flexible hours for part time.

ConsPay was mediocre. Store layouts and uniforms could use updating, they've been the same for decades!

stressful

Cashier (Former Employee)
La Canada Flintridge, CA

I worked at Sport Chalet part-time for less than a year

ProsYou get a good sense of camaraderie with your fellow crew. The store is beautiful. The HR department was nice. Starting pay was $8.75 for cashiers.

ConsThe stress is palpable, since the store's sales constantly didn't do well. Also, being so close to headquarters made the manager always operate on a constant high stress level. Having multiple store managers allowed for miscommunication.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure all new hires get properly trained. My training day was cut short because my hours were cut. I was never given the opportunity to get another day, so I was expected to learn on the job, during peak outdoor sport season: summertime.

Not enough employees to spread the workload

Assistant Buyer (Former Employee)
La Canada Flintridge, CA

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time for more than a year

Prosgreat access to product discounts, overall company enthusiasm for high-end products, strong culture of getting outside and being sports and outdoor enthusiasts.

ConsWhether in the stores or corporate office, tough times forced Sport Chalet to survive by spending a minimal amount on labor. Stores were often run on skeleton crews and corporate buying duties were spread thin. Pay was subpar to industry standards.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe corporate office needs some help. I would recommend a strategy that includes training employees to move to the next level. Lack of layers currently makes the opportunities available at the corporate office slim and advancement and reason to stick around have no appeal.

Sport Chalet allowed me to work full-time while I was in college and working for my degree.

Department Head (Former Employee)
Roseville, CA

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time for more than 8 years

ProsFlexible hours, high merchandising standards, good products, clean stores, specialty retailer.

ConsOften becoming mismanaged, more emphasis on new policies than company's core values with high regard for customer service, short staffed, qualified employees often not compensated appropriately.

Advice to Senior ManagementConcentrate on core values again, customer service is king, selling and adding on is important but not to the point that it forces anything upon the customer, be the benchmark of sporting goods retailers again, do not become Sports Authority.

ProsFun people and cool to be around the sports you love. you can also get huge discounts from many different companies.

Things Get Bad When Raises Stop

Cashier (Former Employee)
Temecula, CA

I worked at Sport Chalet part-time for more than 3 years

Pros25% discount on items, pro rated items, good friendships made

Conspoor management, poor morale, poor pay

Advice to Senior ManagementBring back raises, pay managers better, happy employees make a better store. Employees are miserable so customers aren't eager to go back. It's not about more credit cards- it's about a good experience. A good experience will bring customers back. The experience is lacking because the morale of the employees is down very low.
