I have been working at Sport Chalet

    Pros

    Nice stores, good employee discounts.

    Cons

Company likes to blame its mangers when stores are negatively effected by general economic conditions. Middle management adept at deflecting. You never feel that anybody has your back. Sport Chalet preaches "team"; it doesn't live team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

The people are what make you want to work there. Everyone is amazing, there is also good room for upwards moment...

    Cons

...because everyone is turning over SO fast. Poor work/life balance, low pay, inept leadership, poor review system, no raises, systems are outdated, and just an overall lack of devotion to a goal or strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People at the top need to restructure. Until that happens the same hole will keep being dug.

I have been working at Sport Chalet

    Pros

Very cool CEO. AWSOME co workers. Great products. The customers are for the most part, pretty cool too.

    Cons

Middle management. The layer between the CEO's vision and the store managers is out of wack. They value only results and don't care at all for their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

First, Get rid of the "ranker" it's killing this company. You're putting more importance on bras and underwear than actual selling. We spend more time reporting than we do helping our customers. How many years of poor results is it going to take until someone realizes that the "ranker" is not helping drive sales? Stop diluting the vision of this great company. Second, for the love of god start taking care of your employees. They are not cattle, they are not "score cards" they are the life blood of this company and you're killing them!

I have been working at Sport Chalet full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    -Laid back
    -Friendly people to work with
    -Flexiable Scheduling

    Cons

    1. No annual raises, has been frozen for the past 7 years
    2. Incentives taken away which give employees nothing to strive for
    3. No promotion opportunities
    4. No in-person training clinics to really learn the product & skills to be an "Expert"
    5. More responsibilities with no appreciation or extra pay
    6. Old technology that is both frustrating to employees & customers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale in the stores are down because the company no longer wants to show appreciation for their employees. Company only cares about getting customers signed up for credit cards, reward memberships, warranties, add-on sales, & budgeted goals, but for those top employees & top stores in the company, no incentive is given to show any sort of gratitude. Very few employees who are true experts have stuck around but not happy how things have turned out. Company & management continue to hire outside applicants for positions of higher pay instead of offerring the positions to the loyal & deticated employees that have been hoping for a change or raise of some sort.

I have been working at Sport Chalet full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Most employees have been there many years and really care about what they do.

    Cons

Very few options for growth. It's very difficult to get approval on new non traditional ideas. The salaries are not competitive and it's difficult to get a raise or promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a more open mind to trying new things. Make sure to promote those who deserve it. Try to create a less traditional old school work environment.

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

You will meet some incredible people. Sports attract people who love cooperation. Customers don't NEED anything, they WANT. Some of my best friends have been made in this industry. Pro deals are an industry standard, the company deserves zero credit for it. Employee discount isn't great in the stores. You will get a ton of experience in a short time. Working with such inept upper management does that.

    Cons

Where to start? Employees who have been there a long time know how far and tragic the fall from grace has been.

Upper management has thrown all of the company's core values out the window while acting like nothing has changed. Some adjustments had to be made due to financial hardship, understandable. But using a no-raise policy on a pay scale that was already outdated has destroyed morale. This policy has now been in place for over five years. Questionable tactics have been unofficially utilized to circumvent this.

The atmosphere at the upper level is completely toxic. Middle managers sent to CYA University. Everything is about pleasing executives at the expense of sound business decisions.

Unrelenting commitment to metrics with absolutely zero track record of showing success. Sell warranties and credit cards or go home. Sell accessories or have your hours trimmed. Perform well on the company metric ranker or work six days as an exempt employee. Anything to make metrics look good, to heck with profits.

The daily stress level of managers is borderline mental abuse. It's constant.

The buying department is stretched entirely too thin to be effective. As a result, they're absolutely terrible.

Bottom line, there are no redeeming qualities that can offset this miserable place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid destroying a man's dream by making bold decisions and actually look for the cutting edge to make your company the juggernaut it can be. The worst part about working here was seeing all of the potential wasted. Never has so little been accomplished with so much.

Re-organize your executive team, get back to basics and treat your employees like you actually want to keep them.

    I worked at Sport Chalet

    Pros

    Great discounts and good coworkers.

    Cons

Horrible pay, and they do not care about the bottom dollar. Only credit cards and warranties is what they are worried about.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your employees and give raises where they are due. There are manny new employees making more than employees who have been working there for 4+years. Raises need to be unfrozen, this is creating lots of resentment within the company. Also stop worrying about the "ranker" and start worrying about your bottom dollar.

    Pros

I made so many friends while at the company, and the environment was very welcoming. They provided you with great tools to better yourself and your knowledge of their products.

    Cons

Retail is always difficult because of the hours. It was often difficult to get time off when needed. They normally had a rule that in order to get time off, you needed to make sure someone would be available to work that shift. Of course no one would willingly step in to agree to a certain shift. It was always a hassle.

I worked at Sport Chalet full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Free employee rentals, great pro deals (although that comes from the vendors), 25% off discount, sometimes great coworkers, discounts to local snow parks. They give out pins and pens to remind you of how many years of your life you have wasted with the company.

    Cons

They demand job performance but do nothing for organizational commitment. You could be the most dedicated employee with your heart and sole in the company and the company will NOT care.

Sales goals are based off a poorly made excel spreadsheet called the "ranker." My goal was to sell only 1 bike per week to look good on the accessory to bike ratio.

They call themselves the experts yet they push certain things on the customers especially items that the company gets great margins on. Employees are scolded for not selling warranties or getting Visas/Mastercards. The action pass (rewards program) is alright but I feel as though the system is antiquated and the company doesn't get as much as it could out of it.

COMPENSATION IS TERRIBLE! No pay raises since being frozen in 2008. You can work your tail off and still get paid minimum wage just like someone who clocks in and just breathes air for their shift. I was only given a pay raise after I left and came back and then later when I was promoted to Department Head after 7 years.

No chance for advancement or at least taking on more responsibilities and roles. If they have a role that needs filling they hire someone. If there's an open management role, they bring in wack jobs who were managers in training at a high volume store (they often don't understand low volume stores). The company mostly has teenage and low 20's employees who get treated like crap, so then they are just there because it's a paycheck.

Management is inconsistent in distributing hours to employees and will even try and illegally low ball full timers. The love to hold your hours hostage for sales numbers. Some managers are great (tend to be the ones who shield employees from upper management) but other managers are yelling robots and care only about sales numbers. The cycling of managers among stores is too frequent and not thought out. Some managers choose not to act on important things because they know they will be moved to a different store soon and it will be someone else's problem. This is often the easiest way for bad employees to fly under the radar and stay employed.

Management has stripped the department heads of all power.

You cannot request time off over any holiday weekends. If you are full time you are required to work 2 of the 3 days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. You must also close at least twice per week. Regardless of full time or not, your availability will often be ignored... and then getting the shifts you cannot work covered becomes your problem.

When times are tough, like they've been for the company for a while, they cut training. Then they wonder why customers get upset about the lack of knowledge the employees have. Then the employees get yelled at for low sales numbers. But this is too complex, it seems, for anyone higher up at the company to understand.

BOTTOM LINE: Sport Chalet needs to care about its employees more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize when an employee is dedicated to the company and take advantage of that, instead of treating them like worthless minimum wagers. Also, if your going to make demands about sales and add-on extras, make the demands attainable and recognize when forces outside the employee's control prevent the demands from being met (low customer count).

GIVE SOME SORT OF INCENTIVE AND RECOGNITION TO ACHIEVING THE GOALS AND ALSO FOR HARD WORK. (a picture at the front of the store is not proper recognition or incentive) BRING BACK PAY INCREASES. STOP SCREAMING AT EMPLOYEES WHO DON'T ACHIEVE YOUR UNREASONABLE GOALS.

The attitude since D**k's has moved into California has been business as usual. You CANNOT expect to grow when you ignore changes in the external market environment... that's business school day 1 stuff

TAKE A CLASS IN ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT HOW TO PROPERLY TREAT EMPLOYEES TO ACHIEVE GOALS.
