Pros
Great place to work. Management could use some work on how to properly manage their employees. Lots of benefits with the job too. Free skiing, discounts, etc....
Cons
Better control of their inventory and having more control over what you need. Management needs to learn how to manage!
Advice to Senior Management
Work with and teach your employees how to grow. Sitting in the office all day is how a lack of communication affects our relationship with management.
Pros
Easy job
I get to sell merchandise I find interesting and fun
During ski season I get occasional access to free ski pass and free ski tunes
Hours are flexible
Cons
Tight on payroll - management reluctant to offer significant raise, approve over-time
Low pay
Hard to get 40 hours
Management forced to nitpick about insignificant things by DM
Advice to Senior Management
Extended coverage plan sales should be evaluated on a store-to-store basis, rather than being based on general corporate standards that don't make sense for all locations.
Pros
Health benefits and employee discount.
Cons
Lack of growth, poor senior leadership, negative atmosphere.
Advice to Senior Management
Payroll is always looked upon as a controllable expense, however when running a 40,000 square foot store you need more than a manager an authority and a cashier scheduled. Payroll for store is so low that managers take vacation days in order for staffing to be appropriate. The stores lose more in theft from not having adequate staffing than the staffing would cost that would deter thieves.
Pros
They trained well. They make you push certain items that can make you a little extra money. Good discounts within store.
Cons
It is retail. Corporate is not ran well, they always change how things are run. Corporate micromanages everything within the store.
Advice to Senior Management
Management does well within the store. Managers do need to push more on cashiers being more time efficient. Overall B+.
Pros
The employee discount was excellent, cost + 10% which equated to 25% - 55% off everything I bought. There are some talented people there that are a real pleasure to work with.
Cons
Working in IT at the Sports Authority corporate office was the most unpleasant job experience I ever had. The turnover is extremely high. The mix of technology does not work well together. The amount of vendors and contractors make the environment over complex and there is a lot of finger pointing going on in management. Overall, employees working in IT at the corporate office are very unsatisfied.
Advice to Senior Management
There are a handful of directors that make the corporate office a bad place to work. Go to HR and review complaints against your managers and directors. Next review all of the employees that left the company in the last year. The directors with the highest amount of turnover and complaints should be escorted out of the building today.
Pros
close to home
good retail experience
Cons
-incompetent management
-DM's out of touch with stores
-no recognition at all.
Advice to Senior Management
take the time to actually understand the store and not just read off a list handed to you.
Pros
Understanding local boss. Willing to work with you on availability for work. Great benefits structure.
Cons
Little to no chance for advancement. No accountability for lazy part-time workers you just want a paycheck. On the opposite side, the full-time employees are expected to be responsible for anything and everything and give their heart and soul to the job.
Advice to Senior Management
I would ask upper management to at least make eye contact with us lowly, hourly, peons when you honor our store with one of your visits. And to stop threatening the people who DO work and figure out a way to make the people who DON'T work accountable for their actions.
Pros
Very good work life balance, flexible schedules, clear expectations.
Cons
Smaller Markets do not get the focus and attention they deserve to grow sales.
Pros
If you love sports, ofcourse its a cool place to work at.
Cons
Unorganization of management. And theirs more managers than regular employees most of the time..
Advice to Senior Management
Organize yourself!
Pros
Purchasing goods at cost +10% on promotional days. Access to website for manufacture deals. Other people that work at your location.
Cons
The terrible Music. Hearing the same song multiple times a day. Same music each and every day takes a toll on morale. Being pressured to sell insoles or extended coverage plans on items knowing they have a lifetime warranty. Also knowing that you wouldn't receive a raise after a years worth of hard work because company was buying a stadium and a private jet. Employees are not treated as equals.
Advice to Senior Management
Some managers are worthless. Don't contribute and work toward the common goal of teamwork. Increased responsibility, decreased work ethic.
