I have been working at Sports Authority full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities for advancement at the Corporate Office if you put forth the effort. Great people, young athletic populace, gym at the office, classes at lunch in Yoga, Pilates etc. summer hours let out early on Fridays

    Cons

Lots of turnover in executive management, company has a hard time defining who they want to be in the marketplace as each new CEO bring a different spin (4 in 10 years)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider part time positions at the corporate office, committ to an executive team and let them do their jobs / stay in place long enough to develop a vision

Great Brand - Weak Inconsistent PE owners have caused great uncertainty and cultural dysfunction

I worked at Sports Authority full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A great brand name - it's too bad their PE owners have not supported it with strong strategic advisors. The Sporting goods market is a youthful, Interesting and fun business to be associated - unfortunately the SA reputation has been tarnished over the last 10 years of inconsistent management driven by it's PE owners.

    Cons

Lack of consistent leadership driven by knee-jerk reactions and far too many management changes made by LGP (PE owners) of SA. The absence of true authentic owner support has resulted in great cultural dysfunction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is tremendous need for more consistent management and strategic focus that will begin to re-instill confidence internally and externally for this retailer.

    Pros

Good employee discount. Generally good co workers. Fun and enjoyable at times.

    Cons

Benefits are marginal at best. Paid time off is nearly non existent. Lots of employee turnover. Departments are very silo'ed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to lower level employees. They really are running the business for you while you are out test driving your next sports car.

I worked at Sports Authority full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The employees at the corporate office are hardworking, fun and energetic people to work with. The employee discount is acceptable, but basically in line with other retailers.

    Cons

The executive suite was a revolving door during my tenure. I blame this mostly on lack of leadership from the private equity firm that owns the company and the board. Basically they have lost touch with the consumer and don’t have a good understanding of consumer needs and value. Also, there is a lack of investment in maintaining the infrastructure of the company to keep up with the every changing minimum standards consumers require for POS systems, returns systems, loyalty systems, ecommerce systems, inventory management, supply chain, etc. Sports Authority always seems to be one or two steps behind instead of leading the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a strategic plan and stick with it for more than 6 months at a time. Think long term on satisfying consumer needs and tastes instead of how quickly the company can go public again.

I have been working at Sports Authority full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

This is a growing company that may offer more opportunity than similar companies where competition is stiffer.

    -Great Benefits
    -Work/Life Balance

    Cons

    -Compensation
-Issues with senior Leadership and upper management in the past but optimistic outlook for the future

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shouldn't rely so heavily on retail experience to indicate one's ability to strategically manage/lead at the corporate exec level.

Former Employee - Group Manager in Denver, CO

I worked at Sports Authority full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Casual work environment
    -In Denver
-Some great, interesting, smart people, but most keep quiet because if they rock the boat they are asked to leave... and for a lot of people they don't want to leave because they appreciate knowing what sucks about SA versus having to worry about what might be bad at a future company.

    Cons

-No strategy or vision -- very short-sighted on sales for a particular weekend because Comps are King not Brand. A "campaign" ends up being a 20% off coupon.
-Many people have been there for AGES so they have become complacent and just let stuff happen around them even if they don't think it's right or best for the company.
-Strategy is just "did last time this not suck?"... good, let's repeat it.
-The office is in a boring & isolated part of town.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Bring back leadership who have a real focus on making the company better.
-Don't just pretend like you read the engagement survey -- actually understand why people are leaving and what they need to be more satisfied.
