I have been working at Sports Authority (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun environment, good discount, good pay for management

    Cons

Front end procedures at least 10 years behind the competition. Chases instead of setting their own trend. Doesn't care about family/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Stop being your competition and start being your own company. Set the trend by being open less ie Thanksgiving and other holidays. Also, no one shops for treadmills at 9:30pm. Bring your systems into the 21st century (registers, return procedures, distribution). Get rid of the stupid and out dated SCALES and let your employees do what you hired them to do, sell and make the customers happy. This will allow the Managers to mangage and focus on developing their staff.

Company moral needs some help. A lot of negative comment roam around the sales floor

    Advice to Management

Listen to the ideas of your employees and management staff. Corporate need to take us into account when deciding on policy.

I worked at Sports Authority full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people below management. Good place to learn about sporting goods product, inventory management, open to buy processes, advertising and opening new stores. Worked closely with the vendor community and built great relationships.

    Cons

Lack of respect from middle management and directors. You can't challenge or question business practices. You're not allowed to grow treanding businesses. Training program for new employees are a joke. Same training program for the merchandise training program. Lackluster employees teaching classes. Promised a placement after the 10 week program but most are not placed. Just floating employees. Human resources is not there for employees. More concerned about the company's interest. Seems like they turn a blind eye about bad managers, bad senior buyers and really bad VP's and directors.

    Advice to Management

Heed all of the employee comments from the countless engagement surveys you send out. Good information about the current pain points. From experience the ELT is getting the wool pulled over their eyes or you know and don't care. Get rid of the promoter / detractor program. Customer service stinks at the store level, product flow to the stores stink and the store order process is choaked off due to open to buy.

    Pros

Good Discount There's always something to do Very fast paced work enviroment

    Cons

Poor Management Decisions Many Lazy Managers No Holidays Off Unrealistic Goals for sales staff Good work goes unnoticed Management is stuck in pointless meetings and conference calls most of the day. Absolutely unnecessary morning meetings, everyday.

    Advice to Management

Management only really pays attention to the brown nosing. Regardless of how good and capable someone is at their job if for some reason they dislike you. you can say goodbye to any advancement opportunity. They play favorites very hard and tend to only promote those that they are very close with even if they are not right and under skilled for the job. The level of professionalism among the co managers is laughable and if you have a career plan for a specific individual please go talk to them and tell them what the plan is, instead of having private meetings and keeping them in the dark.

I have been working at Sports Authority full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

As a full time employee, the benefits are decent. The vacation time you earn is nice. After 5 years you get 3 weeks vacation time

    Cons

Horrible management who could care less about the associates. All that matters to management is getting ECPs which are their extended coverage plans. Very low annual raises

    Advice to Management

Treat your associates with more respect. It's a very negative what did you do for me today mentality.

  11. Easy Job, Terrible Managment

I worked at Sports Authority full-time

    Pros

Good discount. Benefits are provided to all employees, even part time workers.

    Cons

Disorganized management. Corporate doesn't seem to trust local management. Higher ups visit the store every month making sure the store is running properly. Employees were forced to stay late hours before the higher ups came and straightened up the store and put for signage that should have been put up days or weeks before. Sometimes we would stay until 3am cleaning the store. On regular closing nights the store would close at 9pm but we would stay cleaning up for up to 3 hours come nights. NO COMMISSION! So theres really no incentive to push customers to buy large ticket items. Selling extra coverage plans (ECPs) or insoles are one of the main factors to how many hours employees would get. $1 was rewarded to employees to each one they sold, but selling add on items is very difficult and unnecessary for customers to buy.

    Advice to Management

Better manager training in team work and business. The managers I had were very incompetent and had to ask for my advice at times.
