Advice to Senior Management
reward your employees for going above and beyond. Implement a manager traing program to develop your employees. More team buliding activities.
Pros
nice staff easy to get along with
Cons
have to sell or get fired
Advice to Senior Management
keep it up its hard to manage college kids but just try and focus on the companys goals rather than their own
Pros
Has a laid back atmosphere, easy to get along with people. Flexible when it comes to needing days off. I enjoyed working there.
Cons
Manager would get on us to sell warranties, I am not much of a sales person so I didn't enjoy that much, but if you can deal with pressuring people to buy warranties then you have nothing to worry about.
Advice to Senior Management
Although I did not like selling warranties I understand this is a business. Besides that I enjoyed everything about sports authority.
Pros
Decent hrs. The work isn't hard. Usually really happy with the day at end of shift.
Cons
Have to sell, sell, sell for fear of being fired even though you dont work on commission. Work as a team and if you dont have a good team you cant really get anything done.
Advice to Senior Management
Drug test the employees!
Pros
the only good thing about working at a sports authority is the discount, because i buy a lot of golf stuff, i get good deals. there are actually "some" managers that are hard workers.
Cons
working at sports authority is a walk in the ball park to some poeple because they are suck ups to the managers and those are the ones who get promoted. Most associates ask other associates to do their jobs, very lazy workers. management in sports authority is horrible, they make all the associates do everything while they sit in the back office and talk about what they did over the weekend. not only do poeple working on the floor have to sell a certain amount of shoes to make a goal to not get fired, the merchandise crew that has to re-do a wall to make it how it needs to be, stock the shelves, customer service, do other associats jobs, sell shoes, be on register, and also work for a insurance company, the poeple that work in the warehouse also have goals to meet. There are very few managers that actually work hard at what they do and compliment poeple about what they are doing. the place has a very bad vibe to it. overall sports authority is not the place to work.
Advice to Senior Management
do your own work, dont fork it all over to the associates
Pros
I think some of the better reasons to work here are that you do get the chance to prove yourself on a daily basis. Sometimes the payoff is great and sometimes not so much. But at least there are some managers out there that actually do thank you for a job well done. And, sometimes that is hard to find.
Cons
There are always downsides to any job. That's why they call it a JOB. The cons are always entrenched management with no chance of them moving on. So they are just so freaking bitter with what life dealt them that they pass that bitterness on to you. Then there are the sub-par associates that work hard one day and then think they are entitled to more break time and longer lunches and looking like crap on a daily basis. Then there are the "teenie boppers" that just stand around and just talk all day and don't do a dang thing. So there is always going to be "downsides".
Advice to Senior Management
Appreciate the fact that there are people willing to work for you. Don't ever forget to thank them either.
Pros
There aren't too many good reasons to work at Sports Authority besides the desperate need to stay afloat to pay bills and have what little pocket change they give you for your constant sweat, stress, blood, and tears.
Fellow associates and co-workers can turn into friends and it's possible to build good friendships with the people around you that you work with.
There's sporting goods there and the products can be interesting if there is an interest in sports. You get a 20% discount, but most retail jobs give discounts to their employees, so really that's not a good enough reason.
Cons
No matter how great of a worker, salesman, and employee you are, you will NEVER be good enough to hear a praise about the work you've done. Managers are yelled at by superiors and it trickles down to the lowly store associates in a perfect storm of darkness that looms over this store. You can be positive, but the negatives will outweigh you eventually. You can play everything by the book and do everything right and you will lose. This place sets everyone up to fail. no matter what department.
Now with Operation Big Foot ALL employees are required to sell a certain amount of shoes, warranties, and in soles. If you do not reach your goal, you will be fired. Even if you work in the warehouse or merch and only have an hour or 2 on the floor, you still have to hit your goals.
Advice to Senior Management
Employees are not valued, so why should employees value their employer? You don't believe in us and so we don't believe in you.
Pros
The Sports Authority provides a decent work environment with friendly people for the most part. If you are interested in sports or play sports, the employee discount may also come in handy.
Cons
The negatives of the working at the Sports Authority heavily outweigh the "positives". No one in management cares about anything but themselves. They push warranties sales because it gives them a bonus and makes them look good to the upper level of management. Now with "operation big foot", they have found a way to actually fire their employees who do not sell enough of them. This pointless operation doesn't stop there. Each associate is required to sell a certain amount of shoes per week, even if they work in the warehouse, outdoors, or team sports. A failure to meet the required goals will also result in termination, even if the goals are completely unreachable. When fighting to save your job by selling these products, managers often give you long, tedious projects that will take you away from the customers you need to stay off the unemployment line. The stress that comes along with this job is not worth the barely-above-average wages they pay you. If you have a choice over where to work and Sports Authority is one of them, trust me and cross out TSA before its too late.
Advice to Senior Management
LIGHTEN UP!!! Take this job for what it is - a sporting goods store. You aren't running an army and you aren't saving lives. If shoes are being sold, good for the store. There is no reason to track each individual's sales because who sells the merchandise does not matter. And if you are going to give your associates such impossible tasks, at least give us a chance to reach them rather than piling on the pointless work in an attempt to be authoritative. Big Foot has got to go. If you are unhappy with your associates, there is no need to humiliate them by calling them out in front of the entire store at meetings or putting unnecessary stress or pressure on them. Find another way to weed out the dead weight.
