I worked at Springer Science + Business Media

    Pros

Neighborhood is nice place to spend lunch

    Cons

Management is rather disconnected from staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend some time in the trenches to understand how your constant changes affect how employees work.

I have been working at Springer Science + Business Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fair pay, excellent benefits, excellent training programs, smart and friendly colleagues, and low-stress environment overall. Managers do care about their staff.

    Cons

Slow decision making and platform development. Like somebody else wrote "slow to turn like a cruise ship". Also, it can be a little cliquey and big company impersonal at times. That said, if you're not looking to make friends at work it's fine. Still gave it four starts since pros exceed cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold all employees accountable to the same performance standards. In some teams it seems okay to work slowly and not respond to emails for example.

    Pros

Reasonably flexible schedules. There's nothing else.

    Cons

Extremely poor leadership and management skills exhibited by sales management. Any company that distributes a senior management report with the words "do more with less" deserves what they get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people. Makes changes in middle management. Pay attention to why people leave and don't make excuses for yourself.

I have been working at Springer Science + Business Media full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good support for people at the top who already have a staff underneath them

    Cons

Lower level employees who leave are not being replaced, and entry-level jobs are slowly being absorbed into more senior level positions - twice the work with none of the perks of a better title.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company seems to confuse "promotions" with "raises" - if you get promoted to Editor, your new salary is often $10k-$20k LESS than what it would be if you were an outside hire, and this gets justified because "it's still a pretty big raise".

I worked at Springer Science + Business Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice co-workers. Decent salary. Paid on time. Standard office snacks and drinks. Communal office environment (which I like).

    Cons

Micro-managed with everything, including emails. HR claimed to be a neutral place to discuss troubles with management. Not true.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you mutually agree to team goals, do not get upset when the team "only" meets those goals and does not surpass them. Expecting more than you claim to expect is dishonest.

I have been working at Springer Science + Business Media full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent benefits, and they tend to promote from within before bringing in outside labor. Adequate sick days and the health insurance + matching 401K is a plus. Company invests in professional development by providing outside training for employees.

    Cons

Company culture could use some work. Constant reorganizations upset morale and disrupt performance expectations. Employees tend to form cliques and this practice is (at best) not discouraged by management. At worst it is how management acts as well. Sometimes it feels like I'm back in high school again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale in general is a trickle down effect. If you are unhappy or stressed your team will also be unhappy and stressed. Let your team know if you think they have strengths rather than focus on their weak points.

    Pros

    Work-life balance
    Good benefits
    Vacation time/Summer Fridays

    Cons

    No upward mobility, low pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs to identify who's actually generating revenue & who is dead weight. Too many quality employees have left or are no longer with company. Company rewards mediocrity.
