I worked at Square Enix (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was such a great environment to work in. Everyone was pretty amiable and understanding. The onus of responsibility is up to each individual person; this means that if you're late, you won't be getting money for the time you didn't show up but you won't be berated for it. Great bosses as well.

    Cons

This is more of a downside of QA rather than Square Enix, but the downtime between builds is really lame. The worst thing here is being given nothing to do because they do not give you access to the internet unless you're of a senior position.

    Advice to Management

Have clearer ways to advance in the company.

I worked at Square Enix full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

As full time, nice bonus, if the company does well. Casual dress and office.

    Cons

Can be laid off at any time. Management can be difficult to talk with.

    Pros

Really fun to work here because all of your co-workers are video game fans like yourself. HMO was great, tuition reimbursement was fantastic, 401k matching very good

    Cons

Pay is very bad, managers are just the people who stuck around long enough to make it to that level (so not exactly professional), upper management from Japan is out of touch with the general workers, obsessed with downsizing (no real job security) and time management, all department positions seem to be same pay despite skill set of individual

    Advice to Management

Micromanagement really makes the entry level positions awful. You shouldn't have to clock out to use the rest room.

    Pros

Playing computer games for a living, great co-workers, amazing break room

    Cons

Bosses have a strained relationship with testers, pay is not very high, hours can be long near the end of the contract

  6. Fantastic gaming company!

    Pros

    Everything is awesome at Square!

    Cons

Only downside was the commute, which is more personal if anything.

    Pros

My co-workers really shared a passion for their work, and brought a great energy every day

    Cons

Japan has unrealistic expectations and doesn't try to understand local conditions

    Advice to Management

    Trust local management more

    Pros

If you NEED a job in the game industry and have been refused from all others than Square Enix may be the place for you.

    Cons

Politics to the 10th degree. You will be underpaid. You will be asked to work very long hours (sometimes meetings will be held in the middle of the night due to Japan staff. You will not see your significant other or children very much (except to put them to sleep). Your feedback is not welcome as Japan and EU do what they want. NA is a distribution arm and that's it. Simply put this is not a fun place to work at all. Staff has been seen crying at their desks, treated very poorly (yelled at), etc. Avoid....

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at yourselves and think about why the turn over rate is exceptionally high at Square Enix. Fair compensation would go a long way. Make Square Enix a fun place to work and simply fire the executives that are consumed with power and ext. political. They know who they are.

    Pros

Good benefits. Company is stable. You will learn a ton either by being taught but mostly by just doing it.

    Cons

Very slow to promote. Low compensation and can be long hours (if you let it).

    Advice to Management

Fair compensation that meets industry standards.

    Pros

Interesting work Huge titles to work on Great colleagues UK head of department great

    Cons

Incredibly poor pay for a skilled job Upper management outside of UK seem to care very little about their people Removed a huge swathe of jobs to outsource

    Advice to Management

Care more about your people. Understand that quality work requires something in return. Outsourcing work doesn't always give the best results!

    Pros

Good work environment and work life balance Salaries are pretty much industry average Great offices in Blackfriars London

    Cons

As with anywhere in the games industry, satisfaction is largely dependent on which product you end up working on. Career progression may be considered slow
