I have been working at Square Enix

    Pros

    Everything is awesome at Square!

    Cons

Only downside was the commute, which is more personal if anything.

I have been working at Square Enix as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

For trying to break into the video game industry, you couldn't find a better place to do QA Testing than Square Enix. The environment was well lit and kept cool (sometimes a little too cool) and you're constantly surrounded by SE merch. Getting to talk with your coworkers is easy and encouraged, and everyone there is very helpful and super friendly. Food was brought in and shared at LEAST once a week.

    Cons

The turnaround is pretty fast. People come and go and moving up is (I hear) very hard. I've also heard that some pretty major changes happened to the QA dept after I moved on. I hope the environment is still as great as it was when I was there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Please keep being so cool.

I worked at Square Enix as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    + Inviting work environment
    + Nice people
    + Free goodies
+ Comfortable lunch room and game room
+ Location is right off the 105 Freeway
+ Leads are friendly and informative and always willing to lend assistance
+ Leads responded promptly to inquiries and went the extra mile to voice our concerns
+ Plenty of useful documentation concerning the project

    Cons

    - We were given a brief overview of bug writing during a meeting and then set free on the game. No surprise that many of the testers began submitting improperly formatted bugs. (suggestion: provide a document in an email on day 1 showing a properly formatted bug and other basic QA standards)

    - Testing revolves around localization: grammar, spelling, syntax. There is functionality testing as well, but the brunt of the workload is in heavy text proof-reading and voice to text consistency. We weren't there to "break the game." (I liked it, but it's not for everyone)

    - No recognition for greater effort or time investment. (This is made clear on orientation day)

    - Evaluation process is somewhat nebulous; some people will be let go while others will be kept on for other projects without much clear indication as to how performance has influenced the decision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

+ Provide greater evaluative insight for your contractors

    + Respond to emails

+ Make sure your QA Contractors are as informed as possible: provide docs with QA standards to facilitate an effective workforce

I worked at Square Enix as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

You work with people who enjoy video games and pop culture and the hours are swell

    Cons

No possibility of moving up, no recognition for more effort in the contract positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you have someone that cares and works harder than the average temp, it might be a good idea to at least give them advice or suggestions to move up, even if its into other departments.

I have been working at Square Enix full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The company has changed quite a bit from what I have heard. Used to be only a publishing arm for Japan but now the group is creating and publishing their own products in the digital space. Huge growth in the past couple of months.

    Cons

A ton of meetings. Sometimes it feels like very little is accomplished in the meetings as many are update meetings and not very action oriented.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people to continue to grow creatively. Encourage learning. Continue the team building events, and continue to give employees input to the games you are creating. Empower employees to succeed.

I have been working at Square Enix

    Pros

Excellent collegial atmosphere that encourages strong camaraderie and teamwork. Most everyone has passion for the products we sell, and its shown in the high level of professionalism and dedication to whatever role an employee has.

    Cons

Nothing beyond what is typically found in the industry - long hours and lower-than-average pay compared to other industries, but this is a small price to pay to be doing something you love!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember those that kept the ship upright during tougher times and try to reward and recognize their efforts while keeping a forward-looking mentality.
