    Adjunct professor

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsAs a professor of introductory General Education classes, there is minimal administrative oversight--in fact basically none at all--so you have complete freedom to do whatever you want in the classroom. Your supervisor won't know, want to know, or even need to know.

ConsNo job security. Departments are constantly shifting in size and funding so one can never be sure their position will still exist next year to be rehired. One is never hired on permanently, only hired on contract for a semester at a time.. unless you play the academic game of researching and writing an unprofitable book--for no pay in your spare time--in the hopes of getting published just for the sake of qualifying for the privilege of a shot at part time faculty status.
