    Pros

Company products save lives or make for better quality lives for those for specific illnesses.

    Cons

Too many layoffs too often made it impossible to receive training or have continuity in their release process. Most people are overworked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just reduce employee work force by some mythical percentage or simply because you think the employee makes too much money. After years of quarterly layoffs, the people that are left are the ones who do make a difference, yet you lay them off too.

    Pros

STJ has a decent bag of products. Great benefits and corporate clout in hospitals
There is a sense of pride among the corporate culture

    Cons

Management could leave something to be desired. Narrow focus on short term. No new products for quite a long time. Can confuse pride with arrogance at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within. Value current employees. Get products to market faster

I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

SJM has been a great place to work in that you are always reminded of the benefit the medical devices and technology make in the lives of people. The annual Employee Appreciation Week is capped by a patient sharing their story about how our device saved or improved their life. Makes you feel that those consistent 50+ hours/week are worth it. SJM also compensates monetarily very well. People are rewarded for keeping up with new technology.

    Cons

Work-life balance is a struggle and when your boss is working long hours and contributing to the scope creep of the project you're on, it makes it very difficult to complain about your consistently long hours. Scope and definition of projects is very fluid which impacts morale when people are urged to work long hours to meet a deadline but then the goalposts get moved. People who are busy meeting deadlines, working on compliance to regulatory and quality standards are not held in as high esteem as those who dabble in new technology. Both are important.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clearly lay out the vision at higher levels but also at a level that directly relates to employees, stating what is valued and will be rewarded. If quality is #1, then people working toward that should be appreciated at least as well those who experiment with new technology.

Good pay, zero guidance. Left hand doesn't know what the right is doing and no one notices good work.

I worked at St. Jude Medical as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

$$$ I liked the people that worked there. It was an interesting learning experience on spinal stimulators and how they work for a geek like me.

    Cons

Politically unbalanced. I worked in the neuromod division and they didn't have adequate training for procedures on how we should deal with patients, track implant or explant procedures, etc. VERY DISORGANIZED.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No one really knew what was going on unless you were a favorite of a more seasoned employee.

    Pros

Company treat employees well, time off, benefits and environment. The company is managed well and is very stable.

    Cons

Company has gotten really large and as such the employees are now numbers instead of people. If you like doing the same thing everyday this is the place to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employees a chance to shine through development. When you excel at a task don't make that the only task for the employee.
