I have been working at St. Jude Medical full-time

    Pros

Talented co-workers Innovative technology Employees truly care about the work that they do - they make the company a good environment in which to work

    Cons

Too many projects assigned at one time Direction of company not provided in a coherent manner to employees Upper level management does not communicate well the strategy for growth

    Advice to Management

Create a consistent communication strategy that fosters more collaboration and empowers the employees Focus on integration of the sites - each part of the business offers pros and cons Best approach for building a solid, cohesive team is to identify the strengths of each legacy business unit and work toward implementing these strengths

I have been working at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good products, helps people to live longer, more productive lives

    Cons

too many to list. Biggest problem that this organization are the egos. From the top down, everyone feels they are the best in the company and should get all the credit for everything that is done. Especially prevalent in middle to upper management (RSDs and ASMs). They tend to be micro managers who are always looking over their shoulders. If you want a decent company, look elsewhere,

    Advice to Management

Realize that the people who are at the bottom of the ladder are the ones who generate the revenue that allows you to have a job. The old saying applies: if it weren't for the one's you are constantly trying to step on, you wouldn't be walking in your shoes!

I have been working at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great group of talented people to work with. Everyone is focused and working hard for the organization. Pay is industry comparative. This is a smaller device company that is now a growing organization going through changes of globalization and portfolio expansion.

    Cons

Managers are micro-managers, they have their hands in every detail and need to get past their small company management style in order to focus on developing people and thereby allow their people to do the work and enable the organization to grow. The competitive salary is on the low end of the scale and the company provides few benefits other than paid time-off. The company shuts down over the holiday season and employees must use their own paid time-off to cover the days closed (which reduces total paid time off). Annual bonuses if granted are minimal and barely make an impact on a paycheck.

    Cons

    - Work culture is more formal and old style - No gym or free food like silicon valley - Some groups can be disorganized or lack leadership - Company is sustaining point, not growing yet

    Pros

Stock price and company direction very positive.

    Cons

Mass lay-off's every year. Benefits dwindled annually. Poor communication lines from sales force to corporate. Must move, to move up.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers from within SJM that used to be in sales.

    Pros

Great pay, great benefits, great team members. Given lots of responsibility very quickly.

    Cons

Long hours. On-Call weekends and weeknights. Hard to separate personal life from work life. Phone attached at your hip, yelled at for not answering a text within 3 minutes.

    Pros

Solid group of people to work with, they care about the product. Fairly good cross-functional cooperation, especially for a big company.

Typical big company issues: bureaucracy, some of the tools are hard to work with.

    Advice to Management

Keep the communication across functions open.
