I worked at St. Louis County Government as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Was treated well by all employees regardless of my status as a temp. I was frequently told that my work was appreciated.

    Cons

It took nearly two years for my position to be approved as a full time regular and then I found out that I wasn't a candidate because my boss's boss didn't approve; I wasn't 'perfect.' . And no one bothered to tell me this until I approached my boss about it seeing that the number of candidates for interviews had increased greatly.

    Pros

    Pay checks are on time.

    Cons

Emperor peasant style management. Future dependent upon willingness to accept status quo, patronage and favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support education and truth rather than patronage.

I have been working at St. Louis County Government full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable job environment, challenging projects to work on, low stress office.

    Cons

Need to be a "yes man" to move up higher in the organization. New ideas are only given lip service. Lots of politics - naturally, it's government.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote independent thinkers, and embrace change when it makes sense to do so. Advocate and promote an agenda for the department, don't just react to external forces.

I worked at St. Louis County Government full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Management is great, easy to work with, and the hours are very regular. Lots of time off once you gain some seniority, and great benefits.

    Cons

Government work is bureaucratic by nature, and SLC is no different. Union issues, legal road blocks, and paperwork get in the way of getting stuff done quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue to empower your employees.

I worked at St. Louis County Government (more than an year)

    Pros

Having the opportunity to work in and for your own community.

    Cons

Realizing that most politicians are a little crooked. Sad

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

PSA POLITICIANS Guide your assistants to help you better serve the people and not how to just "GAME THE SYSTEM" for your own advantage. Do what you was elected to do and SERVE THE COMMUNITY.

I have been working at St. Louis County Government

    Pros

Stability - steady work and peace of mind knowing that full time work is available.
Flexibility - flexible work schedules and ample vacation as well as personal leave are also available.
Retirement options - while most employers are doing away with benefits, St Louis County offers a retirement/pension plan as well as other options for deferred compensation.
Variety of jobs - government work does not have to be behind a desk. There are jobs ranging from forestry and environment health, to public health, public works, computers, social work, human resources, accounting and more.

    Cons

Although the County is the largest East of the Mississippi, it is mostly rural area. The number of opportunities are limited compared to that of a metropolitan area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to do the good work that you do, and lets find a way to promote cultural diversity within the workforce.
