    holidays off, benefits, some employees are pleasant to work with, hour lunches

    Cons

    top heavy management, crooks and corrupt employees get away with everything, manager shows favoritism towards other employees

    I worked at St. Louis full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Good networking potential with non-profits around the city. Decent pay. Good work-life balance; once you're off the clock your work is done. Easy to take vacation & time off when needed.

    Cons

    Absolutely toxic work environment. Supervisor was absent from the office for days at a time without explanation, yet micro-managed things to the extent that work would stall in the meantime. Lack of regular staff meetings contributed to chaos. Unclear separation of responsibilities, with work being shoved down to the lowest person on the totem pole. Co-workers without supervisor status are told they can order others around. Toxic environment where bringing up suggestions for change or items of business that need to be addressed results in harsh criticism. Finally, every time that someone would quit (5 people left in the time I was there) they spent their last 2 weeks being treated like they were invisible by the supervisor. By far the worst office I've ever worked in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Review the supervisor. Look at the retention issue and talk to former employees about why they left.

    Pros

    great place to get a start
    benefits are good but could be better
    civil servant for most positions so very difficult to get fired

    Cons

    working here is very political. this company is a who you know matters to get promotions
    pay to park if you work anywhere in the downtown area while the other departments recieve free parking.
    not consistant through out the dpeartments. somethings you are able to do in one department but would not be able to think about doing it in other departments.
    departments change the rules because one person cant follow the rules & then everyone suffers instead of just taking action with the employee that needs it.
    no raises & when they do give you a raise you get furloughed for it. been with the city for abour 10 years and i have had only 2 raises. also when you get a raise the begaining salary for new employees goes up as well. so if you started at the bottom you will never make more then the minimum starting pay even though you have been there longer & probably know more then the new hires because of the time youve been there.
    pay is on the lower scale for positions
    no merit raises
    civil servant positions for most positions and other employees use this to their advantage, because its very difficult to get fired,& dont do what they need to do.
    lack of training for positions
    very low moral

    Excellent benefits and opportunity to make a difference in the City of Saint Louis community with many excellent coworkers and job security

    Bad apples give the city of saint louis employees a bad reputation, some management is not competent and not transparent
