Large Corporate in a challenging time

Sales Manager (Current Employee)
Johannesburg (South Africa)

I have been working at Standard Bank Group full-time for more than a year

ProsSpace to move throughout business
Consultative Culture
Friendly environment
Preferential rates on lending and transnational services
Strong view on moving further into Africa

ConsExternal Training budget
Can be slow to market
Still very siloed between corporate and retail banking
Long in the tooth on certain procedures and processes
Can be tactile versus wholly focused on solution delivery

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider the staff lower down the organisational chain for insight and analysis. There is a lot of knowledge sitting with frontline staff and more engagement with them can help derive an even greater competitive advantage.

Great coworkers smooth over many of the rough edges

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Standard Bank Group full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGlobal markets is generally a very pleasant work environment. It has an easy work culture, good leave policy and I have great coworkers with a strong team spirit. You also have a lot of autonomy with respect to your personal goals and work directions. The new offices are also great and working in Rosebank is a big step up from working in the CBD.

Cons1) Very top heavy so career advancement is difficult
2) Business plans are occasionally very ad hoc or difficult to understand
3) The structure of global markets is very rigid so creating new business units is very difficult
4) The blue treacle will catch you at some point, some people in the larger institution seem to be focused on slowing down enhancements and improvements instead of being business enablers

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Interesting

Corporate Ervice Responsibility (Former Employee)
Lagos (Nigeria)

I worked at Standard Bank Group full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWorking at Stanbic bank was Challenging and gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. the camaraderie in the bank was very supportive and encouraging.

ConsThere were no training opportunities and remuneration wasn't very encouraging for such a demanding job.Promotions are also veeeeerrryyy slllooooowww. Had it been better I would have stayed.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice your very loudly preached about "work-life balance" and dont be too quick to bring in new people inadvertently overlooking the ones you have in house.

A great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Standard Bank Group

ProsAs an intern, it was great. The company allowed me to speak to people in different divisions and encouraged innovation in my work. They gave thorough feedback and were friendly and inclusive.

ConsThey were downsizing that year so it meant my internship didn't lead to a full-time position in my desired division. I still had great industry experience.

Not bad, not great

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Standard Bank Group full-time for more than a year

ProsGood people, salary and offices (London)

ConsTechnology could be better. Inappropriate systems for volume of business
Not enough investment in and encouragement towards professional development.
The only bank I've worked for that still hasn't moved to a paperless work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in better technology. There has to be a tipping point as the current headcount needs more support.

I have been working at Standard Bank Group full-time for more than 3 years

Prosvery relaxed atmoshere, deadlines not too strict, friendly people. Excellent work-life balance due to the stress free environemnt

ConsSystems were not adequate at correctly measuring risk, traders would not take in anything indicated to them and were not very positive to any suggestions. Had a reputation as cowboys due to the trades they were taking and their attitude. not an ideal environment if you want to learn a lot and get an idea of cutting edge systems. Please note quite a few f these deciptions might have changed as that experience happened almost 8 years ago.
