Good environment, smart people

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Standard Chartered Bank

ProsWork in a very dynamic environment and can always experience new things. Very exciting in the financial industry. Very organized and friendly people.

ConsSometimes you need to push more to get the job done. This is a common thing in a large company I guess. Too many people below you and above you.

challenging, fun, independent

Institutional Sales (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Standard Chartered Bank full-time for more than a year

ProsFriendly and forgiving environment for the most part. Willing to take chances and provide juniors opportunity for career growth. Giving you space to have your own work style.

ConsLess team work and guidance from senior or supervisor. Often there is transition hiccup. Have to be self motivated and fully independent. Management more interested in effort and relationship building.

Advice to Senior Managementmore structured and clear line of reporting matrix. Should pursue meritocracy rather than relationship based culture.

The Cons outnumber the Pros, but the Pros outweigh the Cons. Barely. Difficult in NY. Better in other centers.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Standard Chartered Bank

ProsEmerging markets focus is compelling and lucrative. Fiscally healthy. Weathered the recession quite well. Compensation can be very good depending on the position. Benefits package is excellent: $60/mo. employer contribution for transit, FSA, Comprehensive Medical/Dental, with domestic partner coverage, generous paid leave, 3 volunteer days/year, paid training, 4% 401(k) employer match, pension.

ConsLost opportunity to capitalize on weakness of bigger banks during downturn. Limited growth potential in NY... advancement usually requires relocation to target markets (Asia, Africa, Middle East). Terrible trading/risk management systems. Strategy from senior management is muddled. IT investment is well below the market standard.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in IT. Decentralize management away from Singapore. Leverage US resources more. Hold to your strategy and present it more clearly and frequently.

Terrific place to work

Associate Director (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Standard Chartered Bank

ProsGreat people at work and at play - numerous ocassions to interact at work as well as socialize outside of the job. Concertered effort to train and offer support when required.

ConsInternal information technology is under staffed or not prompt to reply or to fix isses especially in the most critical time of the month when deadlines need to be met

Advice to Senior ManagementMore of an attempt should be made to encourage/train or direct personnel who are in the middle of their careers....a lot of emphasis is on either new graduates or candidates with twenty plus years of service

A good place to start your career

Credit Analyst (Current Employee)
Beijing, Beijing (China)

I have been working at Standard Chartered Bank full-time for more than a year

ProsLots of trainings opportunities. The International Graduates program is good for new graduates as it offers not only comprehensive trainings but also almost unlimited job openings when you are deployed. As the bank is grounded in Asia, Africa, and Middle-East, you will have cross-country exposure such as collaborating with international colleagues and rotations in another country. It is also possible to move internally to other countries if you are capable and well-connected.

ConsThe system and procedures are ever changing, which results in unnecessary inefficiency sometimes. The working hours could be long once in a while, but is honestly very acceptable compared to many other banks.
