I worked at Standard Microsystems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The people were like family. Looked forward working everyday.

    Cons

Communication was a big problem. Even though I was promoted, there really wasn't any room for growth. The company was sold to Microchip Technology which, I was included in a lay-off which consisted of 95% of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New ideas and improved software programs are usually an asset to a company.

    Pros

Smart, team-oriented professionals around the globe
    Good pay and benefits
    Challenging, dynamic work and environment

    Cons

CEO that came in, worked for 3 years and wanted to cash out for her retirement = sold the company to a company that was inequal in all ways negative. End of story.

Ok place to work, but nothing special

    Pros

SMSC had a good and diverse portfolio of products. When one product line was down, others were usually doing well and able to make up the difference. SMSC bought a few good and unique technologies but could never quite take advantage. Best thing about SMSC? It beats what came after it.

    Cons

SMSC never acquired enough critical mass to get to the next corporate level. Over the last few years, it became obvious that upper management was more interested in making the company look good on paper rather than actually growing the business. When they finally found a buyer not sophisticated enough to tell the difference, upper management sold out the rest of us and made off with a small fortune.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too late now, but you need to stop overfilling the ranks of upper management with your buddies from previous jobs.

    Pros

Cutting edge technology with talented and good people. Great place to work as far as flexibility goes. Management willing to work with employees when it comes to personal life and work schedule.

    Cons

Unstable and constant downsizing in New York. Employee's extremely insecure due to outsourcing and downsizing. Tough for employees to stay focused and engaged when they don't know if they will have a job quarter to quarter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Due to instability, employees more worried about their job instead of just doing their job.

    Pros

The work place is nice and the people are easy to get along with. The jobs are relatively stable. Some divisions have projected long-term growth.

    Cons

The management did't hold the long-term view of the company. What they did was pumping up the stock price by buying small companies in the last few years. However, they rarely intended to integrate them.
SMSC now is part of Microchip.

I worked at Standard Microsystems full-time

    Pros

People are friendly. Nice office environments.

    Cons

Too heavy on management and not enough engineers to do the work. Top management has always been looking for ways to cut staffs in order to meet or exceed the numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You did it, finally got sold to another company, despite many unhappy employees.

Former Employee - Validation Engineer in Austin, TX

    I worked at Standard Microsystems

    Pros

Over all the environment is relatively laid back and work pressure is not so bad. Being a mid size company one gets to work on different project that can be fun specially for an Engineer.

    Cons

There is no growth in this company, and management have no clue what they are doing !! No matter how hard you work or how creative you are the work you do is never appreciated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice is there has to be a way to have a check and balance system between the employee and the managers. Managers are abusing the employees and employees work under the fear of loosing the job. How can one perform in such a lousy environment !

    Pros

They occasionally hire. Hang out for some time while you find another place.

    Cons

management style is secretive, sporadic and increases uncertainties.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some new blood to head up the business groups.

I have been working at Standard Microsystems

    Pros

Good people to work with and great management under Directors. No shortage of projects to work on and chips to tape-out.

    Cons

Ridiculous project schedules. Very disorganized at times. Lack of vision from Senior management. Profit sharing takes place at VP level and above, so the people doing the real work get nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put on your visionary caps and develop projects the customers need down the road instead of responding to upgrade requests that may eventually get cancelled or not generate revenue. Also, stop spending so much money on mask sets.
