Good place for grad school; choose your lab carefully

PhD Student (Current Employee)
Stanford, CA

I have been working at Stanford Hospital & Clinics full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe professors here are some of the best in their field or are up and coming and doing exciting work; there are no big problems with funding; there is a sizable grad student community, and they are currently working on improving the education experience for grad students

ConsA large part of your grad school experience depends on what lab you join and what project you choose. If you choose your lab/adviser and project wisely, you will probably do well and enjoy grad school. However, at the beginning of grad school, it is difficult to know how to best select an adviser and project, leading to frustration and unhappiness after several years of grad school. Also, I had a difficult time dealing with a variety of unusual administrative issues during grad school; the people in the registrar's office are not particularly helpful and I ended up relying on department administrators to help me navigate the system.

Decent, but not "Google - like" perks

Life Science Research Assistant (Current Employee)
Stanford, CA

I have been working at Stanford Hospital & Clinics full-time

ProsFor an academic research institution, it pays relatively well (especially compared to neighboring UC's). It's funding is relatively stable, and the staff community support is decent. Great stipends for education, childcare, etc... and a concerted interest is shown by executive staff about the health and wellness of the staff and faculty. But as is the with all research jobs, most of your experience really depends on who your Principal Investigator is, you research team, and the success of the project itself.

ConsMost of your research experience really depends on who your Principal Investigator is.
