    Ok as employer

    Intern (Current Employee)

ProsNice offices, location, interaction and out of work opportunities around campus.

ConsPay is really low. Costs are high.

Egos are high. Most work is very dull unless you're in some theory fields.

Advice to Senior Managementsome groups and departments are very poorly run

Great environment and campus. Need more opportunities for growth.

    Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Stanford, CA

ProsEnvironment is really great with nice weather and spacious campus. People are nice and intellectual. Good to have them around to exchange ideas and have inspirational conversations.

ConsI work in a lab and people come and go. Supposedly there are a lot of faculties and staffs, students and lab members but I don't see them around often. Feel a little too independent and more opportunities to learn new skills will be great.

Lots of freedom to pursue interests with little guidance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsFlexible project goals and schedules
Great facilities to work with and live in
Lots of smart and helpful people to consult for help when needed

ConsCan often encounter annoying bureaucracy when trying to get things done
Little guidance and direction to get to goals efficiently
Expensive to live and work at given the low graduate student pay!

Nice people, low pressure, little opportunity for advancement for fellows

    Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    Stanford, CA

ProsThe smart people, interesting work, decent benefits.
You get an opportunity to learn from some great professors. Not much mentorship in certain areas

ConsFew fellows make it to professor. Just a fact of life. Not much mentorship in certain areas. It's left to someone taking an interest in you or not. If your mentor leaves or switches, forget it, you're career as a fellow is stand-still.
Poor parking, poor pay compared to private sector options.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe honest with fellows about career prospects. Don't try to take advantage of fellows in terms of work hours or new requirements in the middle of fellowship just because they are near-slave labor.

Great atmosphere, benefits. Working in a lab may be a cruel, cutthroat experience.

Social Science Research Assistant (Former Employee)

ProsBeautiful campus, access to great cultural and intellectual departments and events

ConsLow salary, cutthroat lab, grant-chasing mania
