I have been working at Stanford University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of support, great status, good benefits, access to amazing resources. One of the most beautiful campuses on earth, great food available, and many places to exercise in an absolutely phenomenal climate.

    Cons

One of the most expensive places to live in the country / world. Bosses and mentors are self-selected to be workaholics, anti-social savants, and poorly-trained managers. There is lots of HR support if problems arise, but your experience will be heavily influence by the quality, ethics, and choices of your boss/mentor/PI.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enforce better management and mentorship training for professors who are expected to act as mentors/managers. Some of the management fails I have witness here are appalling. Word-class expertise in a specialty subject does not at all imply even a little aptitude for management skills or effective mentorship.

I have been working at Stanford University as a contractor

    Pros

The staff here are supportive, passionate, and aim to have a positive impact on society through education. They truly want to help their instructors deliver good quality courses.

    Cons

It can be challenging to get accurate feedback since the evaluation forms are given electronically, only the most dissatisfied students write the feedback, skewing negative the results.

I have been working at Stanford University

    Pros

There are many intelligent professors and students here, which makes the research interesting. The campus itself is very beautiful.

    Cons

Cost of living is very high. For a graduate student salary, its difficult to find something reasonably affordable nearby.

I worked at Stanford University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The researchers and their work are world-class. For a physics department of this caliber, there's great work/life balance. The postdoc salaries are good relative to the rest of the field (though the field is, of course, horrible relative to the "real world").

    Cons

I don't have a lot of bad stuff to say. I loved it there. Parking on campus can be hard to come by, I suppose?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Students/postdocs would benefit from more insight into career trajectories that take them out of academia. I know that this is hard to do from within academia, but it's necessary.

    Good place to study

I have been working at Stanford University

    Pros

Intellectual stimulation is great, compensation is fair, the variety of fields to take part in is fantastic. Classes tend to be really good, though there are exceptions. The prestige is incredible. Campus is gorgeous. Downtown palo alto is a nice place to study and to grab a coffee with friends.

    Cons

It really depends on your situation. Training can be non-existant and guidance lacking. If your a student things can be tough at first. Look around and talk to people. There are tons of supportive mentors.
