I have been working at Staples full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

You never have to worry about overtime in any position other that General Manager.

    Cons

With several branches of services being out sourced it was very difficult to handle matters in a timely manner. The turn over rate is embarrassing to the point where customers notice the amount of new employees..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thanking team members goes a long way. I think the company would benefit from having more "leaders" and less "bosses"

Former Employee - Team Supervisor in Peachtree City, GA

I worked at Staples full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I can't think of any pros to this job. The closest I can come up with would be the 10% discount on merchandise, and that's really not that much to brag about.

    Cons

Paid little. Manager wanted too much and did too little. Training was on a computer and was very anti-union.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire better managers to run the store. People who know how to work and delegate.

I worked at Staples part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Staples has a broad selection of office supplies, printer cartridges and technology used in offices. You can find furniture, computers, telephones and the basics to set up an office in a one-stop shop. The customers are knowledgeable and interesting to find solutions for.

    Cons

High turnover with limited hours and limited wages. There's never a dull moment when you try to find out what's really going on. Limited responsibility from start to finish on a job means that the customer doesn't know who is responsible for what.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Coordinate your business processes so there's less "dropping the ball."

    Pros

    Average salary for college grad

    Cons

Lack of diversity in executive mgmt, just look at the website. Up north bully tactics. No specific schedule for associates in fulfillment centers. Consistent lie that staples is a great place to work, more like a NJ sweatshop. Only four mgrs, in the entire warehouse had degrees, rather promote Hs dropouts, than hire competent grads. All they cared about were numbers and always wanted sups to terminate or do dirty work for incompetent uneducated ops mgrs. can completely understand why company was started by Bain Capital. Sleazy upper mgmt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire, go to college, and stop faking it by reading business magazines

I worked at Staples part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good people work there reasonable hours unless your looking for 40+ a week.

    Cons

Location is horrendously outdated infrastructure wise, I saw newer faster computers used in a Gamestop I worked in almost 3 year prior and it really makes it hard to help a customer when the computer system might as well be running off steam power. Company doesn't seem to want to give that location the hours to even try to compete with the Office Depot across the street and the Best Buy next door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The store management was great and they understood that there corporate management was absolutely deluding themselves in thinking that the current structure was working or there just lining there pockets in preparation for a golden parachute style company bust.

Staples is a very demanding company, with little work life balance

I worked at Staples full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

strong company, decent pay and benefits, and bonus plan

    Cons

no training, lack of store payroll. Inconsistent messag in the from DM and RVP in the Atlanta market. Company using low cost operating model LCOM, to keep stores open. 12 to 14 people in a building with all the tasks, ads, conference calls, and the constant pressure to get tech sales and copy sales. Pay for associates is terrible. They want big sales from $ 7.25per hour associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your head out of the sand and invest payroll in the stores. You cant operate to a profit. Put asociates in the store Stores need to have sku count reduced. Lots of dead inventory.
