I worked at Staples Canada part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy to get along with management, simple goals and on-going training to improve sales skills. Wage was average for retail with compensation for hard work. Easy to work schedule with some of the management.

    Cons

Retail, so sometimes difficult to meet expectations with slow days. Sometimes hard to compete due to limited technology in comparison with other large tech stores. A lot of technology to know as associates covered the entire tech department and often aided the other sections.

I have been working at Staples Canada part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Shift flexibility, low-entry requirements and employee discounts on electronics.

    Cons

Managers were rude, treated you like dirt, and were often agitated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating your employees as expendable and you won't have the turn-over that you do. I never once saw a genuinely happy employee working there. I left on my accord because the environment was not positive, at all.

I have been working at Staples Canada part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are a lot of contests in store. Easy going job with flexible hours and not too much stress.
Meeting new people that are very polite and just lovely.

    Cons

Personal growth in such a company was nil. You want to stay in staples, to get $12 an hour, you need 2 years or 3 years. Some managers tend to pre judge but other than that it was pretty good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Promotions to some people.
    Do not prejudge

    Pros

Decent pay for hours put in
work life balance is important to most higher managers

    Cons

Promotions sometimes seem to be watered down with red tape. Even to get one of your high performers to the next level it seems like it takes twice as long due to the red tape.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let your in store managers manage the business and their people

Former Employee - Divisional Sales Manager

I worked at Staples Canada full-time

    Pros

Their focus on people development means that you usually have a strong core of managers who are focused on giving you opportunities to learn. The scheduling is very flexible and there is very much an emphasis on work-life balance. The company is not afraid of change.

    Cons

They don't give you a lot of vacation time to start and you have to be with the company at least five years before you get any more. It is important that you know the right people and are part of the right clique.
