Pros
It is very family oriented, it's customer based, employee's look out for each other, respectful managers and employee's respect of their managers, communication.
Cons
Low pay, High stress environment, high expectations for a low income job.
Advice to Senior Management
Give your Store managers the ability to make changes based on their judgment, allow them to base pay rate on how experienced one is and how well they do, give them more credit for what they do.
Pros
Flexible schedule. Home town atmosphere. Team support. Challenging environment focused on development of multitasking skills and retail sales. Technical abilities are challenged daily.
Cons
Sometimes focus on sales is pushed past a casual level of communication and into the realm of used car sales personnel. However, Staples stands behind their name and choice of product line.
Pros
Good People to work with and for.
Good Benefits
Nice Work Environment
Very socially aware and seemed to care about employees.
Cons
Typical big bureaucracy that one expects in a large company.
Slow to make changes.
Overall no complaints.
I have worked in worse places
Advice to Senior Management
No advice. The leadership seems very competent and they seem to care what the employees have to say. Overall not bad
Pros
In today's world of companies that play hiring & firing games to keep their labor force as cheap as possible, the team at the DC would actually let people stay there and keep advancing through the payscale for a decent amount of time (a.k.a. years). There were more than a few people I worked with that had been with the company since its beginning in the 80s. The pay and benefits were also better than a lot of other local jobs in the area.
Cons
Varying levels of perpetual soreness or blisters on your feet depending on where in the warehouse you worked, but that comes with the turf for warehouse work. Other large companies operating local distribution facilities paid more too. The overall work experience followed the economy as well, with the job getting worse/more annoying as the economy got worse. Equipment wasn't maintained as well, hours slowly went down, etc. Hopefully if the economy ever turns around some of that might turn around too.
Advice to Senior Management
If the economy picks up, do not hesitate to turn things around internally too. The last thing anyone will want is for the economy to get better while the sites are forced to operate as if it's still bad.
Pros
Manageable work load and proper training for tech department. not commission based.
Cons
Having to push software and insurance plans on people. 30 minute lunch break.
Pros
Number one company in the office products industry. Global footprint. Large number of products and services to offer customers. Good benefits and stock vesting.
Cons
Very large company, disconnected from senior leadership. Due to acquisition and "right sizing", you may find you've joined an internal group that's being phased out. As is typical in large companies, a handful of young people are put on the "fast track" to middle/upper management (often for unclear reasons) while competent employees and managers languish for years in one role.
Advice to Senior Management
More transparent leadership structure and promotions. More communication with front line employees. Greater effort to integrate other lines of business with the office products team.
Pros
Quality of life, Weekends off , Vacation time, paid for overtime, paid training, and possible support staff. Benefits after 30 days.
Cons
GM pushes work on Assistants. Poor performance falls on Assistants. Reporting issues to upper Management never gets solved. lack of staff
Advice to Senior Management
Document everything you do also make sure your work is known and proven. Watch your back at all times. All managers are not equal.
Pros
Flexible hours
Enjoyed fellow co-workers
Plenty of hours if you want them
A very easy job that does not require a lot of thought
Cons
Not many opportunities for advancement
Manager was incompetent in hiring practices
I felt I was passed up for promotion several times
Advice to Senior Management
Hire from within
Encourage and promote the employees that you already have
Make sure you understand what you are talking about before you belittle others
Pros
The benefits are very good. The company is in good financial health. Overtime pay for Sundays, Holidays, work over 40 hour per week.
Cons
Not enough hourly associates to get the job done. Stores are understaffed, working conditions (stress) for managers are terrible. Company is never satisfied with performance.
Advice to Senior Management
You need more part-time hourly associates in the stores if you want 'World Class" results.
Pros
good work-life balance, too many bosses, too much reliance on building a process that no one follows. Sh*t rolls down hill.
Cons
Get into the right inner circles and you will be rewarded. If you do not, things will be difficult for you.
Advice to Senior Management
You weren't always in a leadership position. However, none of you seem to remember that. Take a hard look at yourselves and how you treat employees you like vs. don't like. This isn't High School, is it? oh wait...
