    Staples

    Mobile Consultant (Former Employee)
    Audubon, NJ

ProsSomewhat flexible schedules. Management sometimes helpful. Benefits were passable despite the fact that I believe a company this size should offer better benefits.

ConsJob ended because Staples had no idea how to sell and market cell phones. The position was eliminated because Staples did not develop a proper plan for cell phones. They thought that they would put mobile devices in and people would flock to the stores despite the fact they were years behind the curve. Management is extremely incompetent at times. Since ObamaCare was enacted, they pushed all associates to 20 hours or less so they do not have to pay for health care. Online trainings are a chore. Need to know someone to advance. The District Manager was a complete dictator and people cowered in her shadow.

Advice to Senior ManagementFrankly, I don't have any advice to Staples to give. They are set in their ways and do not encourage an open door policy.

ProsThe people in my department are great and fun to work with. Lately, the summer time-off policy has been much better than in the past. Hopefully that is something they will continue.

ConsMoving up is a challenge. Even if they recognize the quality of work you're doing, there's a lot of red-tape involved to move up the ladder. The pay isn't great and neither are the raises. Most of the time, the people that don't deserve to move up, do. Health insurance benefits are a complete joke.

Good for someone looking for experience but don't stay long.

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsSome managers can be really cool and helpful. Training from the start. Gaining plenty of retail/customer service experience. Laid back environment.

ConsPay sucks. Some managers are all about the sales and are very mean. Benefits suck. only 10% discount. Cant use many coupons. Sometimes a lot of pressure. RUDE CUSTOMERS. bad hours

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees like humans and at least give up the same benefits you give the customers. Stop putting so much pressure on us to sell something no one wants to by and stop skimping on the pay and the hours. Managers need to be on one accord with what theyre all saying to the customers and employees to avoid confusion.

OK work environment, sub par compensation/ Easy Tech

    EasyTech Associate (Current Employee)
    Santa Fe, NM

ProsFun work, always things to do, cool coworkers

Conslow pay, and minimal if any bonus money. over extended as a tech/salesperson. They also prefer to keep many part time employees as opposed to full time employees to save money... pretty awful because they will work part timers full time hours 3 out of 4 weeks, but not give them proper benefits.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay employees better, more performance based pay would help. Give good employees full time hours and benefits.

A great company of its sort, now working hard to turn around

    Anonymous (Current Employee)
    Framingham, MA

ProsExecution and dedication of the leadership

ConsMiddle management as a group is too large
Outsourcing saved money at the cost of hurting effectiveness and efficiency

Advice to Senior ManagementDeveloping and retaining talents at every level should be a criteria for the performance appraisal of any management staff. I have seen so many managers and directors who don't really care how his staff is doing, but unfortunately these managers and directors are doing pretty well themselves. This is ridiculous.

    Long time employee review

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Framingham, MA

ProsGood amenities, decent pay, good opportunities for advancement, great people to work with and good direction for company (finally, but might be two years after it would have been truly needed).

ConsBenefits are decent, but not inexpensive, Strategy / direction for future of Staples was a bit late in forthcoming and thousands lost their jobs as a result of multiple restructurings.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvice to C-level leaders - become more visible in internal office culture and become more active with recognition of effort. Executive leadership needs to be more innovative or be supplanted by newer, more forward thinking leaders.

Once great....now failing. Belief that only corp HQ knows the way to success.

    Sales Manager (Former Employee)

ProsAssisting customers directly for their business needs and or personal needs...priceless and rewarding.
Succeeding every year by one on one face to face customer service and sales.

ConsRestricted and not supported by District level mgt on initiatives and or successful sales and customer service performance...."if it is not in the plan...don't waste time trying it" "just follow the cookie cutter plan"
Recent Restructuring Bonus plans to give executives bonuses when the executives plans failed for last 3 yrs....absurd. Board of Directors rewarded top executives only...see Bloomsberg story

Advice to Senior ManagementStart looking to the experienced front line teams that DO the customer service, sales and merchandising that WORKS instead of 100% relying on new interns or corporate plans that only have 4 base options. Cookie Cutter operations works contrary to reality of customer service....embrace the stores and empower them to manage them to maximize THEIR customers not the A B C D version in a theoretical book at corporate planning theorizes about.
