Pros
Focusing all the time on great place to work
Cons
But they make it hard - because it is not a great place to work
Pros
For the most part, very competent co-workers, sometimes you are selling a good product, decent benefits. No one is held accountable, so for slackers, it's an ideal spot.
Cons
Not always selling good products that are easy to believe in. Poor management, more focused on the process rather than the prize.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop fitting creative people into a rigid process that doesn't address the true needs of our customers. Management needs to know how to define the best outcome, not the best steps to reach that outcome.
Pros
job, also has some good customers
Cons
little acknowledgement, tough goals, little pay
Advice to Senior Management
start with your leaders, you can have great company meetings, but if your leaders revert back to same bad people habits, we go no where
Pros
Staples is the world's largest office products company and a trusted source for office solutions. We provide products, services and expertise in the categories of office supplies, technology, furniture, Copy & Print, and cleaning and breakroom.
Cons
Hours are long, expectations are not attainable if you do not have the hours, bodies to make it happen. You are micro-managed.
Advice to Senior Management
Need to bringing easy to all members of management and all store associates.Need to make bring back the fun, less stress.
Pros
Hard working employees
Customer loyalty
Good GM
Staples.com
Cons
MBA consultants who have never worked retail floors
Avoidance of customer interaction from headquarters
Senior leadership missing growing the SMB services space because of lack of selling and service backgrounds
Cost controls at retail level destroy new business growth
Decision making is way too long. Easier to waste money on outside consultants instead of strong leadership willing to take risks
The main bet is that online retail will win vs Amazon
Advice to Senior Management
Hire and promote senior leaders who have worked outside retail and understand technology services. Lose the headquarter avoidance of talking to business accounts and treating young talent as not worthy of growing technically.
Pros
As a teenager, it gave me the flexibility with school hours and made for a great entry level position, but I wouldn't make a career out of it.
Cons
-Sometimes night shifts are a bit longer than expected.
-Back to school/Black Friday is a ridiculous time. Frequently you'll be yelled at by customers for things that are beyond your control.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure employees know their are advancements within the company and how they're willing to lend their support to show each employee you care.
Pros
Easy going, laid back, understanding management. Benefits for part time employees. fun atmosphere, uniform shirts provided, discounts on products. yay
Cons
poor poor poor compensation, and even worse bonus structure. lack of ability to grow within company, many times I have seen or heard managment being hired from outside company.
Advice to Senior Management
poor poor poor compensation, and even worse bonus structure. lack of ability to grow within company, many times I have seen or heard managment being hired from outside company.
Pros
Opportunities made available to all associates, you just have to show them what you can do and they will be more than willing to help you get you where you need to be.
Cons
some customers are rude, demanding, and insulting
Advice to Senior Management
Be aware of associates needs, they are the people who get you to be where you are too!
Pros
I started with the company many years ago and was extremely happy to work for a retail giant that actually cared about customer service. When a member of corporate would visit the store they never asked about sales numbers or what we could do to better meet margen goals. They asked about how we could better help the customers that came into the store and how we could better make sure they were satisfied with what they were getting.
Cons
The customer service thing has gone out the window in the past few years. They are now trying to compete with Best Buy and have absolutely no idea how to do it. This leds to the little guy (store associates) getting "disciplined" for not meeting outlandish sales goals without having been given any solid sales training.
I have worked in several stores and the major problem a the store level is always communication. The in-store management staff spends a good deal of time chatting with each other, but whatever decisions they're making don't get rolled out to the associates. Again this results in the associates getting "disciplined" for a verity of reasons.
Advice to Senior Management
Pick a direction and stick with it. While I was with the company focus went from customer service, to selling paper, to selling printers, to furniture, to computers, to warranties. Just pick something and get good at that before moving on. Also, pay more then minimum wage. If you are going to expect more of your associates then your competitor how can you justify paying them less and not giving a reasonable employee discount (10% off those Bic pens is really the best you can do?).
Also, Im not sure if corporate knows what goes on in the stores, but their HR department should really look into it.
Pros
Willing to work with your school schedule. Usually able to take off any day you want with short notice. Overall, good place to work as a first job or while in school (high school or college).
Cons
No real advancements, unless you want to be a store manager. Not much different than any other retail job. Pay seems to be low compared to how much the company makes.
Advice to Senior Management
Not much to say. Continue making this a good place for college students to work. Would be nice to get better pay raises.
