Rushed "training" for a Copy & Print Associate

I worked at Staples part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Above minimum wage, friendly co-workers, several opportunities for advancement within the company, 15-minute breaks, and good benefits offered for part-time employees.

    Cons

The computer I used for training was the same computer that most of the employees used to clock-in with. Every time a manager checked on me, they reminded of how quickly they needed me trained and how they don't get paid until I am trained. I feel like I am a very fast reader and completed the training modules pretty far ahead of the expected time to complete them. I also only received two days notice of my schedule for the following week. Not very family friendly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have the schedule out two weeks in advance like you said would happen. Don't rush through training, or it shows the new employee that you don't care about their success in the company and only care about your own timeline.

    Decent retail experience.

I have been working at Staples part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Management is hit or miss as with most retail places. You can get decent hours as long as you are willing to work. The 10% discount is lower than other places I've worked, but still nice to have.

    Cons

Starting pay is usually minimum wage, unless you are in the Copy Center or an EasyTech associate. Training is primarily on the computer, so many associates go out on the sales floor unsure of what their job is. That doesn't last too long, but it's frustrating for new employees.

    Pros

Great Staff, they hire some of the nicest and friendliest people

    Cons

    Pay was a little low

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fight for your employees a little more. You see what they are capable of, they deserve more commissions not less.

    I worked at Staples

    Pros

Good Work environment. Hours are rarely an issue, work is not over demanding unless you're right in the middle of Back to School. Overall good company to work for. Great job to start working through college.

    Cons

Depends on what store you work at. Working here can be a breeze if you have the right manager, but a lot harder if you have a bad manager. Some push sales down you throat, some are more helpful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't force protection plans. I know you're review depends on them but you will make your staff resent you by doing so. there are better was than threatening to terminate employees.

I have been working at Staples part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked here for 4 years starting as a cashier and moving to lower level management while in college.
    -Liked the people
    -Flexible hours
    -growth(within the store level)
    -opportunity to help customers
    -Scholarship opportunity for students

    Cons

-Communication from top to bottom, Corporate to store is pretty bad
    -Position cuts, including mine
    -constant change
    -High employee turnover
-to jump from store level into corporate is rare
-GM cares about store employees DM cares about stores Regional Manager cares about DM's and so on, leading me to believe Upper level management views employees as numbers on paper and nothing more
    -Low wages

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify the process in the stores
Online retail is great-keep it up
    Improve employee retention
Great part-time job but would not be okay with a long term full time job in the store post graduation

It is easy to see they are heading toward shrinking store sizes and cutting overhead. It makes perfect sense with this being the online era. Having to compete with amazon is the biggest challenge going forward.

My advice to Mr. Sargent and Company is to make sure you differentiate staples from the norm. Give store and corporate employees the resources necessary for them to be able to get the job done. Most of all, make sure the employee's of this company, at any level, are seen as valuable assets rather than unnecessary overhead.
