Pros
- Friendly and social environment
- Fast-paced
Cons
- Stressful at peak hours
- Mentors are not too helpful
Pros
benefits, flexibility. good job if you have another job or are a parent. bad if you are looking for a full time job.
Cons
managers, bad ones. when they're bad, they're terrible. they want to have a 9-5 in retail and have off weekends. it just doesn't work.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire managers who are willing to put the effort in to make things work, not people who are looking to have their cake and eat it too while talking themselves up.
Pros
It is a good place to be if you are passionate about people and coffee. They also offer a very good benefit package.
Cons
The pay is minimal for the work that is asked. Even if you are able to make the targets, you are often told that you need to do better.
Pros
good for university students
some form of income
allows you to see how food and beverages are really prepared
helps you grow a tick skin - especially when dealing with rude snobby customers who think they are better than you because you are only a barista who is serving them.
Cons
people make you feel small
after seeing how food and beverages are prepared, don't really feel like eating there anymore
Advice to Senior Management
be more strict when it comes to hygiene
Pros
Challenging, fun when not overly busy, They do offer good benefits. I basically worked here just for the health benefits and flexible schedule. It was fun to get free drinks
Cons
Consistantly short staffed versus workload, low pay, Very stressful when busy trying to keep up - one more person on staff would make a world of difference. I was interested at first in moving up, but then saw how stressed the shift mgrs were, and many quit or moved back to Barista position.
Advice to Senior Management
C'mon be more realistic in staffing and labor hours for the work you want done. Seems like the decision makers are out of touch with what goes on in the store, or just not realistic.
Pros
Good benefits, competitive salary, customer-focused
Cons
Highly political, undisciplined mid-management, overly collaborative culture
Advice to Senior Management
set some clear goals and eliminate barriers to project success
Pros
- great people
- free coffee
- new CIO is quickly bringing in new technologies ie. mobility, social media, etc
- a corporate culture that respects everyone
Cons
- medical benefits are ok, spread across all employees so corporate employees will end up paying more out of pocket
Pros
Starbucks is the perfect place to work as a student. There is tons of flexibility, growth, and opportunities to meet and exceed expectations. The reason why I say meet and exceed expectations is because the job requires that you learn recipes or repeat the same types of tasks which gives you a chance to perfect your own personal system.
For example, you have a seasonal rush...a typical barista will get the rush done and wipe their brow.
A well rounded barista will get through the rush and then grab a clean rag and tidy up the store behind, and visible areas and make sure all the milks/sugars are filled.
If you are the "well rounded Barista" doing obvious things without being told (but also communicating with the shift supervisor that you are getting ready to clean up) you will certainly be recognized and excel easily.
Cons
The cons to this job is that you are on your feet all day long. So you can tire quite easily. And as a retail store they surprisingly do not talk to their baristas about driving sales up.
Advice to Senior Management
I would suggest that management think about talking to Baristas about driving sales forces. For example when i first started as a Barista I would give my regulars free specialty drinks all the time. That's not wise. What is wise is encouraging store samples of specialty drinks to increase excellent customer services and potentially drive sales forces since ppl are more open to re-purchasing a drink as opposed to purchasing a new drink fearing they will waste their money.
Pros
health benefits awesome co workers, the smell of coffee, flexible hours, a general awesome place to be in when it comes to the atmosphere.
Cons
some nasty customers and how they treat the baristas some times. not something to look forward to every work day
Pros
+Flexible hours
+Competent management who can empathize with student needs
+Great culture that is born from rich history
+Good benefits (medical, dental, occular etc...)
Cons
-Dealing with rude customers
-High stress during rush hours
-Very hard to switch shifts and not always guaranteed time off.
Advice to Senior Management
I would suggest allowing more freedom to switch shifts. The high percentage of students means a lot of homework and getting stuck working an 8 hour shift can be very tough when you are not allowed to switch shifts.
