    Pros

Great office vibe, relaxed culture, fascinating work and really enjoyed working with my team. Was given real responsibility. Interns had weekly events and lunches to meet with people throughout the company which was great.

    Cons

Wasn't able to decide which part of the company to work in, was told on the first day

I have been working at Starcom MediaVest full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Blue chip clients, great people, strong presence in TV, Print, and Digital which means lots of nice industry parties and perks from vendors

    Cons

Large clients can be inflexible, long hours often required, Agency seems to be slower to adapt to the changing media landscape than its competitors, Emphasis on producing high volume of deliverables rather than helping clients achieve business goals. Very hierarchical and opaque. MediaVest is led by a TV guy and this could not be more plain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to do a better job communicating to clients the key opportunities that are available in the transforming landscape and allocate resources accordingly.

I worked at Starcom MediaVest full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Smart people, nice location, good salary and benefits.

    Cons

Everyone out for themselves, not team players. Everyone is afraid of being the next one to get laid off. Executive management provides little feedback or direction. No clear vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide clear roles and responsibilities. Stop hiding in your offices. If someone is not performing as you think they should, try working with them to find out why.

Frat Party Culture A Product of a Much Bigger Issue

I worked at Starcom MediaVest full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The industry knowledge, company strength. Great training opportunities.

    Cons

Office culture is equivalent to a frat party. Kegs on site, happy hours, nothing for the 25 and over crowd. Not a collaborative environment. Every job is segmented, and there is constant micromanaging, going behind co-workers backs to make sure that each person safe guards themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is the equivalent of how much time you spend in the business, not on actual personal attributions and characteristics. Many managers have the experience needed, but not the communication or interpersonal skills needed to be a good manager. This is not a culture where you can be open or honest and expect to get ahead. People have been let go for getting drunk and doing lewd things in the building, that is a fact. People are also let go for personal reasons that have nothing to do with the work. Work flow and concerns should be addressed from the top, and they are not. If you are looking for a stable, nurturing environment, this is not your agency, at least not the Chicago office. If you are looking to be overworked, undercompensated, and constantly surrounded by 24 year olds playing beer pong in conference rooms, then you really will enjoy it here!

    Pros

Leverage in Market for Buying Media

    Cons

Gains margins at expense of proper staffing of accounts.
Senior Managers (VP+) end up in execution roles because poor staffing leaves holes.
