I worked at Stark Investments as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

They gave me every opportunity to succeed and learn, making sure that the next step in my career would be upwards.

    Cons

The hardest part was getting to familiarize yourself with as much as possible. So many in-house apps and different programs to modify and fix.

I worked at Stark Investments as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Interesting place with good people and lots off products to learn. Opportunity to advance when you do good work. Great office on Lake Michigan.

    Cons

They seemed to be downsizing rather rapidly and senior people were leaving to start a new fund. Heard it was turning into a family office with just a few people remaining.

I have been working at Stark Investments full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Was a great experience while things went well. 2008 really hurt the firm and they never really recovered.

    Cons

Company is folding and closingb its doors. During the draw down it would have been better to be honest with employees instead of saying everything was ok.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make the same mistakes as the past.

I have been working at Stark Investments

    Pros

Lots of tech toys, time to build skills.
Excellent benefits, great work / life balance.
Many talented people to work with.

    Cons

Doom and gloom about future, no new life.
people feel very insecure about future
Many good people let go, others retained

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to your roots and innovate, there is still time to rebuild. This company had such a momentum, but has slipped back

    I worked at Stark Investments

    Pros

Many super intelligent, ambitious colleagues; History of having a good culture. CEO very loyal to firm and works through thick and thin

    Cons

    Highly political, lots of infighting among senior executives;

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't grow too quickly; keep control of the culture; refocus the firm on its core business after the credit crisis and rebuild on a more solid base; get rid of the few bad cultural apples now rather than later

    Pros

    - Nice, smart people
    - Beautiful work environment (right on the lake)
    - Subsidized cafeteria with professional chef
    - Gym on the premises
    - Calmer lifestyle than East/West coast HFs

    Cons

    - Sometimes chaotic responses to short term market movements
    - HUGE layoffs in downturn
    - Senior management not held accountable for poor decisions
    - Brutal mid-western winters

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Hold senior management responsible for their results
    - Expand gradually
    - Sacrifice partner income to retain staff
    - Treat junior people better

    I worked at Stark Investments

    Pros

    - The firm is well known in the world of hedge funds.

    Cons

    - If you're not based in Milwaukee, employees are treated as a different class of employees.
    - Employees are not given an opportunity to invest directly in the subportfolio they manage.
    - The 401k plan through Marshall & Illsey is atrocious. There isn't an opportunity for employees to grow long-term wealth beyond their salaries.
    - Since senior management is so involved in the aggregate portfolio, they sometimes lack the proper management of a firm that is now considerably larger (i.e. not recognize skills/talents of associates that may be underutilized, etc.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Step back and decide which partners will focus solely on portfolio issues and which parters will focus on business issues to be more effective.
    - Give analysts the opportunity to demonstrate investment talent. There are may traders not listening to their analysts and performance would have been MUCH better if some of the analyst recommendations were followed. A true meritocracy would allow analysts to demonstrate talent via model portfolios that could eventually open opprtunities for them as traders.

    I worked at Stark Investments

    Pros

The company is a good platform to learn and improve your skill sets in a variety of asset classes .

    Cons

Company is too top heavy and not enough management fees to keep good employees; no investment direction, adverse selection in employees who are quitting vs staying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the number of strategies and employees, bring the business in line with capital under management, refocus investment strategies to core competencies.
